1.3 mpi - starting issues after inital cold start

Featured Replies

It can't be much of one. How would I go about finding it? Garages can be a bit expensive when it comes to things which are difficult to identify. It's something I'll certainly raise next time it's serviced if I can't do it myself.

i was fixin something in my feli (carb) and i came across the same problem as you, i was test driving my car ran smoothly started first toch etc... just like you described, before it got realy warm i experienced the same problem, of course i check the hoses and everything for air leak etc...

turn out when i adjusted my carb i over-leaned the mix and at start, when engine is ckoched i dint feel it, after its realy warmed the over lean mix only produced a less peppy engine and lower idle (still smooth) fixed it before coming here by adjusting the idle mix now is back to normal...

i bet yours is fuel injected, so my guess if is not the vacuum leak posibly clogged injectors, can you let gas almost run out of tank put fuel injector cleaner + octane enhancer and run like crazy for awhile to clean the injectors ?

if you problem is similar to what i experienced i think that would clear it up...

realy hope you get through it

Hi All,

I mentioned this problem in my 1.3 sensor locations thread but thought I'd post this as it's becoming more of an issue to detect!

Basically from cold start it will start first time as usual, but if you turn the car off before it is fully warm (eg. a minute or two) and try to restart it's a real struggle. Wait for it to cool and then it will start with some persuasion. Let it cool fully and first time again....

I've replaced the temperature sensor ontop of the thermostat and also the crank position sensor to no avail. The car had new spark plugs about 1000 miles ago, along with an oil change and air filter.

Anyone know where's best to look next?

i have exact same issue. my dad thought it was water in the cylinders. just about to put in spark plugs now in case it was that - pity that is not the problem according to your experience..

I decided that it was time to get the problem of the car stalling fixed. Just before the engine was fully warmed up, as shown on the temperature gauge, any stop or sudden braking made the engine die. It restarted instantly but as the traffic encountered daily is heavy and there are traffic lights plus roundabouts it's been a pain.

I took it to a garage which has always impressed. When I picked it up I was told that they had cleaned out carbon deposits from the throttle body and butterfly. It was confirmed that there is no fault with the ecu. The mechanic reckons that the carbon deposits confused the ecu putting the performance out slightly. If it isn't right he asked me to take it back after a few days but I noticed that the idling speed shown on the rev counter when the engine is warmed up is higher which is good. I'll post back if the problem is sorted.

I'm not lucky with this car. I had the windscreen replaced a few weeks ago and today I noticed the footwell has accumulated loads of water. The screen wasn't sealed properly.

If carbon deposits in the throttle body assembly are responsible for my engine tending to cut out so readily and are slowing down the tick-over it may well be the cause of similar injection model glitches. Mine's been fully maintained, is relatively low mileage for the year and no ecu fault has shown up on two tests. The ecu system on the Felicia is likely to be fairly basic. I can't see it having a learning facility. :)
