Going wide on a budget

Featured Replies

I've just received my first proper wide angle lens - a Tamrom 17-35mm f/2.8-4 and it's fantastic, especially considering it costs only £150.  Got mine from Mifsuds :)

Having bought a D700, which is very nice, I suddenly realised that I didn't have any full-frame lenses at the wide end. My relatively small selection includes the 18-70mm kit lens (DX), 30mm Sigma f/1.4 - very nice, but again, DX. Also have the Nikon 85mm f/1.4 which is superb for portraits and low light medium telephoto and the 120-300mm f/2.8 Sigma beast for long range stuff. Both the latter work find on the D700, but of course, I didn't have anything at the short range. After playing with a friend's old 17mm tokina I think it was, it was obvious how much fun I was missing out. You can get some very nice Nikon glass, but it's all four-figure territory, and I just couldn't justify it considering the use I'd have of it. Now this tammy has come along, I'll start shooting.

So for anyone looking into getting a wide-angle lens that is on the budget side, but still works rather well and is FX compatible, I'd highly recommend it.

Here's just an example: you'd swear the monitor is widescreen. :P

It's just amazing how it stretches stuff and gives you so much depth :D:thumbup:

Very nice Xav and a great price! Something of this type will be my next photographic purchase for my 350D :)

Just trying to decide on length and whether it should be 17-35, or perhaps a Sigma or Canon 10-20/10-22 :rubchin:

Steve, I'd recommend getting a full-frame lens if you can, if ever you uprade to a 50D, it would be a shame to only be able to shoot at the lower resolution...

I did have a look at the Sigma 10-20 (a mate of mine has it) and it's great, but not that far off the tamron 17-35 when the latter is on a full-frame body.

The monitor shot isn't good, but shows how much fun can be had :D Also great for indoor stuff - at parties, you no longer have to say "huddle up a bit more please":thumbup:

50D?! I don't know what you're talking about ;)

Have actually been pondering over the 40D now that the 50's been released and perhaps the prices might come down a little. OTOH, Canon have apparently said they're not pulling it

You're spot on with the interior stuff too. I take quite a lot of that type, so it's main use would be that and city/landscape....

 Sorry, meant 5D. or a 1D. Go on, you know you want to :D

In the back of mind I was pretty sure the 50D and 40D weren't full-frame, but it's getting late :o

Unlikely I will need to/afford to go those heights of Canon-ness :D

Cheers,

Steve
