Kia Rio

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just wondered what people's opinions on the Rio are.

My dad is thinking about another car due to him having problems with his current car (Peugeot 207 and the garage as well) and he received a brouche from Kia the other week and he has expressed a intrest in the Rio (super mini) as he beleives it would fall into his budget of say £8000.

The Peugeot is quite well specced second from top model in the 207 range but my dad is not really fussed if he goes back to basics ie losing alloys to steel wheels etc, the only things I would say he would like are electric windows, cd player and thats about that.

I beleive he would keep the car for say four years at a push and the warrenty would appeal to him on a Kia as it is seven years.

From what he has read the car does not get a good write up but I think he is looking for something which is cheap, got a decent warrenty and not bothered about spec.

So what are your opinions on the Kia, I did try to convince him to get a Skoda or the next one up in the Kia range the ceed.

Get a 2 year old C'eed IMO

Buying a brand new Kia makes little economic sense to me unless he wants to run it into the ground

You just have to look at the reviews it was given on TopGear. I believe it won the worst car of the year a couple of years ago.

They did a cheap car shoot out on Fifth Gear recently, that might give him more of an insight into new or nearly new cars in that price range.

I would have though the Panda would be a better choice depending on what size was required.

Cheers mate,

I don't know too much on the Rio but the ceed is a cracking car and the fact my dad would stick on his private plate would hide the age of say what you have suggested.

I think he thinks the name of the car is not great sohe is not sure on their reputation.

He has also considered a fiesta (owned one before but not very impressed on the ride).

The problem with my dad is that he can find fault with any car and grow to hate it after a while and I think he is like that with the puggie as it has been in the garage 7 or 8 times in a year of owning it, the only car he liked was a almera he had.

I would say the Kia would be good for realibilty for him as I've not heard anything bad about realibilty.

I think the Panda would be too small for my dad, plus he has had fiats before and did not like them.

1. I wouldn't advise anyone to buy a Pacific Rim car new. In fact, I wouldn't advise anyone to buy any car new! :D

2. How about a Hyundai Getz or i10? They come with a 5 year warranty I think and may be a better bet?

3. If a panda's too small, you can pick up reasonable Grande Puntos for not a lot of cash these days, especially if you buy 'nearly new', but if he doesn't like Fiats, he doesn't like Fiats!

Is the Hyundai not the same as the Kia?

Same chassis

Like the Polo/Fabia/Ibiza same chassis just little differnces like setup, equipment and interiors

Def look at the C'eed You can get 1.4s (starting at 6700 on an 07) or 1.6s from just over 7500

WhatCar say the 1.4 is the better engine and has more flexibility. 04BHP 1.4 or the 120BHP 1.6

Bu the Hyundai would be the better car of the two.

Someone on here has an i10 and they quite like it

If your Dad doesnt need the space of a bigger car then the i10 looks a bargain and falls into budget if you want a new one.

*edit* The Rio gets a 4 star rating on WhatCar too.

Best off test driving to see what is best.

Davy, has he considered a Suzuki Swift ?

I really like them.

Or even a Fabia ! :D

I looked at the Rio when I was looking at a Fabia but needed something bigger. I think it was an improvement at the time for Kia and quite a competitive car at the time but that's 3 years ago. Have the other manufacturers moved on? I would think so.

Johnny50- Tried getting my dad intrested into a Fabia, but he had a Skoda 30 years ago and would never own another one so he claims, still trying to work my magic on him to reverse that trend.

Never thought of a Swift, that might be another option for him.

Is the I10 the new name for a amica or getz??

My dad would be looking at supermini size due to my sister (12 years old) still being around and they need something that sort of size for holidays, and something with say a 1.4 or 1.5 engine for long distance drives.

i10 replaces the Amica, there's a member called Runboy with one.

If it has not already happened, the getz will be replaced by an i20.

Another option would be a Yaris.Great little cars, sounds like it fits the bill. A guy at work has a Micra and he raves about it I think the one he has is a 5 door 1.4 SE+ or something extra spec.

Micras are ace, and could possibly fit the bill if the Almera was a popular previous choice. :)

Rob.

The paintwork is IMHO sh1te.

Seen a couple where i work that are around the 3 to 4 year old mark and both have quite a bit of rust on the lower doors etc.

Robmawr and big rallyred - Micra's are ace but my dad has seen first hand when my micra on a 03 plate which I had about 4 years ago packed up due to numerous faults including the ECU, Battery, Airbags, ignition barrell all packed up within the space of a year, he even helped me push it of the drive one day!!

Problem with my dad is he likes well known brand cars, over the years he had skoda, datsuns, fiats, tons of fords (mainly escorts), nissans and now the puggie which at the time of buying thought it was a cracking car. I can't actually imagine him in a rio but stranger things could happen.

Cheezemonkhai - Got to agree with the paint situ and I was having a look around the day on the kia website and you can only get four choices of colour and only one I could see my dad having which is a blue or maybe the silver.

Toyota Yaris - Another good choice of car and he knows how good a reputation the yaris has as well as my grandfather had one up until about a year or so ago and it proved itself for six years and 10000 miles.

If I were to say I would think he would go for the following

1)Ford Fiesta

2)Citroen C3 (looked at this before but puggie might put him off a bit)

3)Kio Rio

Might try and tempt him with a polo and see what he says to that.

I had a Kia Rio as courtesy car once (last gen) and it was quite possibly the worst car I have ever driven period! Badly put together, gutless engine, gutless brakes, crap radio, gearbox made of syrup, gear lever the size of a light pole and lackless feedback from the steering. On top of this it was uncomfortable in the front and the pack. It was thirster than my old 214Si which was pretty bad!

Have you cosidered the Mazda 2 or dare I say the Honda Jazz?

Hyundais seem to be pretty reliable. A few people in my family have had them and no-one's had any problems with them. I borrowed my dad's for 4 months once (Accent), covered about 7k miles which included some very rough tracks etc and i had no problems at all and it seemed pretty well built.

I quite like the i10 also, my neighbour has one and it looks like a decent car.

My dad looked at a Honda Jazz before he bought the peugeot, think at the time were a bit pricy for what he was looking for at the time but depending on what sort of trade in he gets for the peugeot its another one to consider.

You've obviously never driven a Daewoo/Chevrolet Matiz then

Roly poly suspension, you fear for your life on motorway corners cause of the lean.

On the note of buget cars, my wife bought a Chevrolet Kalos new about 3 years ago. It was great until the novelty of the newness wore off and then we saw it for the utter carp it really was.

Awful handling, heavy, gutless, thirsty, noisey.... I could go on. We sold it 18 months after getting it with 7k on the clock having lost 45% of the value.

I learnt an important lesson.

True, but my dad did have a Getz 1.1 Auto courtesy car which was quite possibly the slowest car I have ever been in! Having gone from a 2.3T Saab 9-5 to the Getz it was a bit of a step down in power
