Warranty Direct

Well my warranty ends next month and with the cost of a new turbo I am thinking of getting this covered by Warranty Direct, is this a good idea??.

I've been looking at this when mine runs out next april, have spoken to warrenty direct, about the bad rep reported in the press ect... he assured me, that the quote I was given (for the "good" and more expensive scheme) doesn't try to get out of it on "wear and tear" terms... if the turbo goes, its replaced, regardless of miles (but I'm limited to 30k a year) and even if this then preceeds to take the engine out with little bits of metal, its still covered.......

weel bearings, suspension bushes ect (no matter the mileage, unlike skoda's new car warrenty)

just not consumables, brake discs pads, exhausts, bulbs ect..

this was the expensive policy they do though, would cost me about £400 for the year, but bearing in mind I will be going from approc 80k, 110k during that year, and have an MOT due at the end of it, I think it may be worth it... 110k is an "average" time for a turbo to go.... so I will probably go for it.....

he sent me the "small print" and it all looks in order.... the cheaper warrenty looked pants though....

I only do about 6000 miles a year so I might have to ask for a few quid off:).

if its just the turbo you're worried about, see if they'll do you a policy to cover just the turbo, that may be cheaper

I have oneof these at present , just check , as when i received the policy docs , and you pay monthly they will not cover in the first 6 months without taking the value of those 6 months payments ,also unless it is repaired at one of there nominated garagges , even if you have the main dealer option , you have to pay the bill and then claim it back with max time of 21 days to pay , also as the mikles increase on car they deduct a % for the wear and tear even the non servicable parts , they do pay 100% of labour though , so its a balance .

I'm sure they said to me over the phone, absolutley NO wear and tear taken into account ( I specifically pulled them on this because my car will have over 100k during the time of my cover) ...... Maybe a different policy I was quoted on? they did say something about ammounts paid in the first part of the cover........ my dealer will allow me a month to pay for any work done anyway (I still owe them for my front brakes :o ) so that wouldn't be a problem.........

Just got a call from WD and for the best cover will cost me £355 which is not to bad. The car is 4 years old in March so this will give me peace of mind.

cool... let us know if you need to claim, and how it goes :)

Lets hope I don't need to make a claim.

Had a WD policy on the Mondeo and made a claim on it. I had the main dealer option on the policy which meant the work was done by them and they handled getting authorisation for the work from WD. I just had to pay for the work (good old Mastercard!) and claim it back and I had a cheque for the agreed amount within a week. Only disappointing part was that the "hire car cover for the duration of the work" was literally just that. So if your car is off the road for a week, but the job itself only takes 5 hours, then they won't pay for the cost of a hire car for the duration.

My experience of taking out the policy was that their sales staff were desperate to sell you a policy and there was plenty of room to squeeze that premium down. I opted for the cheapest option and they sweetened the deal by upgrading various bits of it for free and then knocked some money off the premium. I think it was under £300 for 20k miles a year, main dealer, wear and tear, and Gold cover, which I easily made back on the claim. The wear and tear cover is for cars under a certain mileage IIRC - I think it was 60k miles.

Hey folks. A most useful thread this seeing as my warranty will expire in Jan. For my 2 pennies worth and although I have absolutley no idea what the company is like, I noticed that Warranty Works is offereing 9% cashback via quidco. Hopefully that willl be of use to someone.

With regards to warranties, I had a 6-month "Car Care Plan" warranty with my car when I bought it from a crappy (non franchised dealer) garage. This was a waste of time, so many get out clauses etc. I did enquire with Warranty Direct to cover me when the other one expired and they did seem a lot better although I didn't take up a policy in the end. Agreed that if you sit on a quote for a bit they'll ring you up and knock money off.

I used Warranty Direct for my Octavia when the original warranty expired but then changed to the 'official' Skoda Care Plan extended warranty which is available through Skoda dealers. You need to look at the 2 side by side to assess which gives the better cover. Different levels of cover are available from Warranty Direct depending on car age and mileage. The cover for a 7 year old Octavia is better with the Skoda warranty than Warranty Direct.

What bad press about warranty direct?

WhatCar magazine seem to push and advertise them a lot

Warranty direct like to say any fault on a car is due to wear and tear and not pay out. Think about it, basically a car is a set of moving parts and everything will be subject to wear and tear as it moves, so it's an easy get-out clause for almost every possible fault on a car.

In my opinion slap the money you'd be paying to warranty direct in a high interest savings account.

They do? Seems to differ from my and other people's experiences :D

At the end of the day warranties aren't charities for beleaguered motorists. They're there to make money. If everyone claimed back more than they paid in, the companies would be bust. I suspect in most cases you'd be having quite bad luck to need repairs over and above the cost of a warranty in one year, year after year.

Not too difficult to find not so positive comments on this company in particular

warrantydirect.co.uk - Review - They even consider tanks as 'wear and tear items'

Advantages: Great way to throw money down the drain

When I took my car to the dealer to have a look because I noticed some things wrong, I was told that they had been informed by Warranty Direct that they could go ahead with the repairs. However, when it came to claiming the money back from them it was a different story. They claimed that all the items changed were wear and tear. This included two electrical fan units and a coolant tank. How is a coolant tank wear and tear.

Warranty Direct - making a claim - Saabscene :: Saab Forum

Now the cost of replacing all this (4 push out/press fit bushes, 2 shock absorbers) is circa £850.00 incl. VAT.

Warranty Direct offered to pay £230.00 in full settlement - their thinking was that all this was unusual wear since the last service 5,500 miles ago and I must have been driving over rough roads (only London) and that they would only pay for half the repairs (although a fool could see that half £850 is £425) OR send an engineer to inspect the car at the garage. The implication seems to be that the garage (or I) are trying it on with them.

I looked into WD just to see if my Felly would be covered, as its apporaching 10 years old and over 100k miles now they weren't really bothered.

I think I looked at their prices and though not worth it really on my Felicia anyway.

with the wear and tear issue (and this is why the get bad press, getting out of it on 'wear and tear', but this is only on the cheap policys) if you go for the best cover they give (as Chris says) you can have it repaired atthe main dealer for any item, wear or tear is ignored on the top policy... I was very careful when I asked them... stated my car had already cover 65,000 miles, and that I wanted the turbo/gearbox/suspension covered with NO quibbles... and they said (on the quote they gave me circa £350) that as long as I didn't exceed 30,000 miles in the next year, i would be covered for the full ammount of any repairs, even (and I asked the worst case question) if the turbo blows and little peices of metal take the engine with it! No wear and tear get out clauses... think there was a max claim per year in money though... if I remember rightly it way max claims of £5,000 in a one year period......

edit: thanks for the posts saying about getting the quote lowered by umming and arring
