I broked my Furby again (coolant problem)

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

After my turbo going last year (thanks to everyone who helped back then ) I'm having more problems with the Furby.

Since the end of September I've been commuting almost 200 miles a day to work. A couple of months before I've had the same problem as many others whereby the coolant has been full but the sensor in the expansion tank has been faulty. This came up at the end of September but I didn't check the coolant level. think I must have spent almost a week with pretty much minimal coolant in the tank

For the past couple of weeks there has been major coolant loss. Every day or every other day I'm having to top up the coolant. My local garage has done a pressure test twice over two days and checked for leaks but all they found was a boost leak under the car lol. They said it could possibly be the head gasket but the symptoms do not point to that.

However since the last fortnight I've noticed that there has been a huge build up of pressure in the expansion tank. After going to work, if I undo the cap on the expansion tank then the water just squirts out the side. Sometimes if I take it easy then I don't have to top the coolant up for two days. However sometimes when the coolant level looks low, I can undo the cap on the expansion tank slightly to let the pressure out, and the collant level with return to normal.

The car doesn't seem to be loosing any performance, the mpg doesn't seem to be affected, and there doesn't seem to be any oil in the coolant. The oil filler cap has no residue underneath.

Has anyone got any ideas what could be wrong? Am going to book the car in with a dealer in Liverpool tomorrow hopefully and they can have the car till the weekend but thought I might ask on here too. I did read the threads by WW_VRS as he had similar problems but I don't think mine is the water tank as the water is returning into the expansion tank.

bump :orb_hypno

Get them to do a block test on it, this wil see if there are exhaust gasses in the cooling system.

Thanks Lummox. The problem is, I'm still using the car to commute and I'm racking up around 1000 miles a week. Car is booked in for Thursday next week, just hope it doesn't get much worse by then.

If there are exhaust gases in the coolant system, what could potentially be wrong? Would that be a head gasket problem or somehting similar? I'm guessing it's not going to be a cheap fix yet again :(

Irf , you shouldn't really be removing the cap from the coolant reservoir when the coolant is hot , its dangeous for one thing

plus there will be pressure in the reservoir when its hot , that is how the cooling system works, although excess pressure could point to a headgasket failure, but i would suspect if this was the case , the coolant would be blow out of the reservor passed the cap

the pink antifreeze is notoriously difficult to see if there is a leak, until there is a crusty build-up

Normally I remove the reservoir cap when the car has cooled down, for instance in the morning just before going to work, and there will still be some pressure built up in the system. The coolant will often be low at this point, and in relieving the pressure it brings the level up to normal or a little bit less if it's leaked somewhere. At first I did remove the cap after driving the car to see how much pressure there was and to top the level up if it was too low, but I do this a lot less now.

I just hope it's not going to be too costly :(

Usually a really quick build up of pressure in the cooling system on the ASZ is a good indication of a gasket failure. Not very common but not unheard of.

Just hoping it isnt the same as mine mate..

Lummox: My engine is the BLT code, I assume the problem would be similar?

WW_VRS: What was the outcome of your problem? I was reading your threads but there's a lot of info in there including something about the water pump and new engine.

Quick update (I have a habit of abandoning my threads lol):

Car went into Alex Lawrie Skoda in Liverpool at 8.45am. Told them about the coolant problems, as well as a cracked wheel and xenons to be raised. They gave me a Fabia II 1.2 estate as a courtesy car, which was promplty offloaded onto my dad so I could take the Merc to work!

Around 12.30 I got a call from Tony. He gave me a figure of £50 for the wheel crack to be repaired and an extra £45 to get refurbished. I said thats fine, get it done. He said there were issues with the xenons not adjusting properly, and if it wasn't under warranty (he's checking up on it), then its £120 or so to strip them down and sort them out.

Now for the big stuff. He told me the water pump needed replacing, as did the oil pump or sender or something oil related(???). Cambelt kit would be replaced too, costing around £650 in total. he said the head gasket would need replacing eventually, that would be around 4 hours labour. That would be around £300 on top. Seeing as though they had the car anyway and I'm doing a huge amount of miles ona daily basis, i told them to sort it all out. Also requested them not to clean my car lol but thats another story.

Great bunch of guys Tony and Paul. They've been mentioned on here before but thought I'd mention the garage and these guys again. They always help you out and always get back to you. just hope my car is back to normal very soon and I get the performance back!
