Brand new Octy - feeble aircon

I have a brand new Octavia, just a few hundred miles on it.

The aircon seems very feeble. It is working (the condenser gets warm and there is SOME desmisting/cooling) but its not very effective. I suspect low gas level so a trip to dealers may be order to get it pressure tested/regassed under warranty. Is Octavia aircon typically powerfull, or is it a weak spot on the car?

Mine works very well, but not as good as Octavia mk1.

You don't have it in ECONomy mode by any chance?

Definitely not weak normally. Have a friend whose new Tiguan had a similar problem the other week. New high pressure switch and re-gas, fine now.

On "Lo", instead of a temperature number, it should be very effective.

No, its not on ECON. The system is obviously functional (some heat in the condenser and the line to the expansion valve gets cool) but it is not working at full efficiency. I guess it'll have to go to the dealer for a charge.

If the temp outside is less than 4c, then the A/C compressor is disabled to stop the system icing up.

actually I thought my A/C was very "feeble" too compared to my very old Mundano.

It's going into the dealer for about 4 warranty items- I'll ask them to look at it. Only 6 months old, and in the cold snap it's REALLY got a lot of condensation inside the windows in the morning.

It's really annoying - was once of the main reasons I got rid of the Mondy. How ironic.

On 'lo' and full fan, you will be freezing your nips off very quickly.

Are you running the system on 'auto'? If not, that's your issue.

take it back in and ask them to do a air con test, basically they measure the pressure and then empty the air con and measure it and then refill it, they will claim not to add more air con stuff but in fact once its empty they have to refill it and bingo its done. :thumbup:

You need to check the larger suction pipe thats connected onto the compressor, this should get nice and cold when the system is running. Turn the fan down to the lowest notch and then turn the ECON off to start the compressor, have a listen for a hissing noise behind the dash, you'll get a hiss initially but it should go away after a few seconds. If it's constant and noticeable you could be running short of 134a.

If all else fails get them to 'weigh' the gas charge out. The quantity pulled out should match the data plate under the bonnet.

Thanks. When the weather's a little warmer (hopefully at the weekend) I'll feel the pipes and measure the temp drop at the vents - I'm fairly familiar with car aircon systems.

I do, however, suspect its low on charge. Its a new car, ('58) but obviously manufactured a few months ago - so either it has a small leak or was under-charged at the factory (hopefully its the latter). I am assuming the Skoda warranty will cover aircon gas? I do know that some manufacturers specifically exclude it.

They should re-gas is leaking.

Another thought is sticking flaps in the circulation system. Someone mentioned how to reset recently in a thread about being to warm in the rear.

Have a quick look at the condenser to see if it's taken any large whacks from stones.

Technically you should never regas any air conditioning system if is it has a known leak. You should use all available methods at your disposal to detect/repair the leak before re gassing.

The car is virtually brand new and the condenser looks in perfect shape. The condenser does get slightly warm when you run the aircon, but demisting is poor. I'm pretty certain its down on gas. The car was sitting for several months prior to delivery to me, so it could be a small leak or it could have been undercharged at the factory. I will take it to the dealer and presumably they'll have a tame aircon man who can take a look at it.

I concur, good luck at the stealers. Could have been a small leak through the shaft seal while it sat around for a while.
