Works laptop has become very slow and after doing a bit of digging i think it could be physical memory problem.

Laptop has 1gb but is showing 188mb.

Was the RAM bought with the machine or from ebay?

If the latter, then you've bought some fake memory. Very common on ebay.

What's the machine make and model Jay? And what version of Windows?

It might be worth running memtest on it or some other memory checking program.

You could get the Ultimate Boot CD - Overview which will give you a bootable CD that has lots of diagnostic tools including memory stuff.
