Dead Octy vRS :(

Featured Replies

I finally have picked myself off the floor long enough to post.

My beloved 2002 vRS died on Thursday.

The garage hasn't established 100% what the issue is, but are pretty sure it's fecked- My gut feeling is that there was an oil blockage to the turbo, causing the turbo to run dry, and bits of said turbo fly into the engine.

One way or another, the engine isn't even turning over, no compression at all, so it's looking like new engine time.

Couple of questions to those more knowledgeable than I:

A) How do I know exactly what engine I need, are they all "AUQ"? The car isn't at home at the moment so I can't check but I just want to get an idea of price online.

B) Where is the best place to buy? Can I buy a new engine or am I best looking at breakers? I must admit I like the idea of getting something new, as the old one had 70k on the clock. Suggestions? Seem to be a few on ebay.

C) How much should I expect to pay for labour? I know the main dealer will rip me off, and they won't fit a second hand engine anyway, so I'll be going to JOMO or somewhere similar methinks (I'm in Dublin)

Thanks all, I feel like I'm in mourning!

Sorry to hear that.

Yeah they are all AUQ coded. A new engine will probably cost more than the value of the car, so breakers are the best bet as long as you here it running.

prob best mate, have you thought of goin for the tt 225 engine?

BAM iirc

why just go for the std 180 when youi could get more

you will need to chec if it is all compatable

You would need to change a lot of components to get the TT engine to work.

thanks guys,

Yeah I've done some reading and it looks like the conversion would cost a good bit more (new ECU, etc), so I'm probably looking at another AUQ.

Anyone know where you can price these new?

I'll probably need a new turbo too, am i best getting the k03 or looking for a better one, considering that the other components are staying the same?

The Vrs runs a k03s turbo you would need to use the same again. You could upgrade but there is nothing that would fit like for like. Also again you would need new maf turbo inlet and outlet made to fit and other bits and pieces.

A possible option would be a hybrid k03s, you would need S3 maf and injectors i think and a custom remap.

If your going for that one make sure it is an AUQ engine as the engine in the picture is not an AUQ engine.

It doesn't even list the miliage!! You want service history as well - cambelts the main thing altho I'd advise changing it regardless.

I'd want to see it running.

Yeah, That's what I was thinking, it's the only one on ebay, anybody got any other good places to look?

I've had a quick search myself, there is this one AUDI TT, A3,SEAT LEON,1.8 20V TURBO ENGINE, AJQ 180 BHP on eBay, also, Audi, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 07-Nov-08 09:49:40 GMT) which i believe to be AUQ engine, you would need to confirm.

And this SEAT LEON 1.8 20V TURBO CUPRA ENGINE GEARBOX DRIVESHAFT on eBay, also, Seat, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 05-Nov-08 00:08:29 GMT) which should also be AUQ engine but again check.

Both low mileage and come with turbo and extras.

RIP - stay away from main dealer! mine cost 2 grand + on a tdi engine!

Thanks mate, looks like that first one is AJQ, which is another similar Audi TT engine, not sure if it's exactly the same as the AUQ, whether the mount points are the same etc.

I think he has put the listing on wrong the tt engine came with the bam 225 bhp engine or the auq 180 bhp engine. I would confirm though.

that one isnot the same as in the vRS, the top or the engine is diff. the coil paks are diff.

I have a feeling the engine in the pic is from an import.

if you did get that one then id have it completely checked and serviced once in and get it mapped and RR to se what she gives.

Hmm not sure now, arn't the coil packs just an aftermarket Hitachi bolt down type?

Also i notice the aftermarket Dv obviously a modder.

I notice the sticker on the cambelt cover states AJQ but i don't think that is the engine code?

all long blocks are externally the same and interchangable, the only thing that differs is the cam cover which is an easy swap.

you can fit the 210/225 engine with no issues what so ever as long as you fit standard manifolds etc which although wouldn't gain you any power would mean if you wish to upgrade your turbo in the future you could run around 400bhp without changing anything rather than the 300 that the 150/180 engines can handle.

Just thinking aloud here but say the op was to get a Bam 225 engine, complete with turbo, ecu, maf, injectors etc. Then modified the exhaust to fit the k04 TT turbo and put his original inlet manifold on so it would go to the SMIC and add the TT injectors, maf etc would this work ok without much more work?

yeah, would need the downpipe for the exhaust though. would be the same as fitting a K04 to your standard engine.

My engines coming out in a month or so and will be sold complete only done 50K and had the timing belt changed recently - pitty your in Dublin! These tend to sell for £800 up but still a lot less than a new one.

If your thinking of fitting the 225 it would be cheaper to add some bolt on parts and have a custom map especially if your having to pay for a garage to do the messing about at £50 p/h labour!

just weigh it up mate.

id go for the BAM as its got better internals(if you want to mod the car in future) if not then just go for the AUQ

DO YOU NEED A NEW ECU FOR THE BAM ENGINE? or will the std one do with a custom map?

To be brutally practical mate, I'd get a new car, and sell yours as a non-runner or strip her and sell it as parts (probably make more money but will take longer and it's effort).

Unless you can find a decent engine, and do the job yourself.....

I've done an engine change in a weekend before, and it was intense. But that was on an old car with carbs and no cat, so was a bit simpler.

I guess it depends how attached you are to the car. If you really love it then I guess the money doesn't matter so much.

I feel I'm talking myself out of my first statement!

thanks all,

yeah, i'm pretty attached to the car, so if it's in any way cheaper to fix than to scrap i'd prefer to keep it.

Is it a two day job to swap engines then?
