OIL type

Featured Replies

Just been to cost co and got some mobil1 fully syn 0 40 turbo diesel oil will this do for the octy:confused:

Assuming your octavia is a pd engine the oil must say on the bottle that it conforms to one of these VW specs, 505.01, 506.01 or 507.00. I am pretty certain the oil you have mentioned does not meet these specs so you shouldn't use it.

does not mention any numbers on the can only that its fully synthetic for turbo diesels

No I doubt it will do.

Certainly not for variable and if it doesn't have the correct number then no go for fixed. There are definately some numbers on the pack even if just the old spec numbers it meets, eg B4 etc etc

It's a fairly old oil as I used to use that on an M reg 306 XUDt.

If you are on variable servicing its grade 5w 30 fully synthetic. As peter says it has to conform to the standards he quotes. Do some searches on here, it will give you all the info you will ever need on oil specs for the Octy!:)

Bit more info from the Mobil web site:

Mobil 1 0W-40 has the following builder approvals:spacer.gif

MB-Approval 229.5

OPEL Long Life Service Fill GM-LL-A-025

OPEL Diesel Service Fill GM-LL-B-025

BMW LONGLIFE OIL 01

VW 502 00

VW 505 00

PORSCHE Special Oil List

So I think not suitable for variable servicing as it only meets VW 505.

Its not suitable for fixed either I am afraid, as fixed for a pd is 505.01. The oil mentioned above is 505.00 which is for petrol engines (I think). It should mention in your handbook what oil specs are needed for your engine.

505 is for the old non PD TDI's IIRC.

No if you use it you will potentially cause your engine quite a bit of damage as the miles start to rack up. Cam and injectors get worn IIRC.

The 505.00 is only suitable for the older generation diesel engines not the PD engines.

For the 1.9 PD engine (105, 115, 130 and 150bhp) the oil must meet the following:

For fixed servicing - 505.01 or greater (so 506.01 or 507.00 can be used.)

For variable sevicing - 506.01 or 507.00 (507.00 has now replaced 506.01)

For the 1.9 PD engine in the Ibiza mk4 Cupra TDi (160bhp) it uses 506.01 or 507.00 for fixed servicing.

If you were to use that specific Mobil 1 oil in your car it would damage the camshaft and followers.

I hope this helps.

OH well back to costco

Then it's no good. It needs to be 505.01 for the engine on fixed service intervals and 507.00 for variable (not recomended) or if you have an exhaust DPF.

507.00 is the preferable oil, ie you can use it in all circumstances.

@skippy print out this list - Fabia-vrs.com - PD Oil Guide - take it with you and buy one of the oils on it. Don't worry that the site is called Fabia VRS - a PD engine is a PD engine, even if its in a Ford.

Skippy do a search on this site there is all the answers to your question to be found.

Why not ask Opie Oils who suppy Briskoda club members the correct oil at discount prices?

Anyone got an idea of what the discount is?

Well done; looks like you have got it sorted for your car.

I would be slightly nervous though about using this in a PD170 engine that needs VAG 507.00 oil which generally is 5w30 (not 5w40).

What is the difference between 5 40 and 0 40 though?????????

The 0-40 is the viscosity rating, the higher the number the thicker the oil. In the days before 'multigrades' were introduced engine oils might have been a 50 viscosity, the oil would be very thick when cold. Multigrades used to be 20/50 then 10/40 etc. The PD engine requires a 5/40 grade, but it must also meet the VW spec.

Found this to be a good thread as when i have been abroad and needed top up i found it hard trying to translate and looking for numbers. Now i take a Skoda pack with me so its ok.

I keep a litre of Shell helix vx in the side storage area in the estate section of the octy2, so I always have the right top up grade with me if required. The top oil bottle came in a zipped cover with a velcro backing.

Then it should say to vw spec 505.01 if it meets vw spec for earlier pd's without DPF at the 5w40 grade. This is NOT suitable for all pd's, as any on a long life servicing routine, of a newer type particularly with DPF require the 507.00 5w30.

People get confused, you can buy a fully synth 5w30 and it will NOT be any good unless it meets vw 507.00. The VW spec is realating to various things like friction modifiers, SAPS content and more I guess - not just the viscosity and origin of the oil!

For your motor on fixed intervals (<10k changes) I would be happy with 505.01 though.

Hi again,

I've contacted Opie Oils who actually give 10% discount to Briskoda club members.

Their recommended oils for the TDi PD engine can be found at -

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-754-50700.aspx

Thanks for all the other info in this thread.

It's all very confusing, I use GM 5/30 fully synth in mine, I get it for £22 for 5 litres trade, I've had no problems with it yet and iirc it's Mobil 1 rebranded anyway, mines a non dpf 1.9, but this oil is used in the whole VXR range which do have dpf's, and a mate who has a dpf Superb has just had to have his dpf done @ 75k has been using the proper dealer service oils.
