:confused: I've got one of the new Octavia (July'04) TDi PD 105bhp, replacing my petrol 4X4 T1.8 hatchback. My first Diesel.

I get the feeling that I'm appling more throttle when moving from a still position, and have also stalled a couple of times. Is this a getting used to Diesel thing, or should I get it looked at by the dealer ? Thanx

Only time I've managed to stall my diesel was when I was seeing what the highest gear I could pull away from a stand still was ;) How many revs are you giving it when you pull away - shouldn't need hardly any.......

Agree with Chris....it should be very har dto stall a diesel.

p.s have moved this thread to "new Octavia" as I assume it is the new shape that you have.

My 110 old shape diesel will pull away on tickover with no problems if you try.

Obviously I do give it a bit more gas when driving normall , but you need to mess things up quite badly to get it to stall.

I managed to stall a 150 Leon Cupra (diesel) when I first drive it - I'm convinced that the 1.8 (at least in the 4x4) has some fancy "don't let the idiot stall it" software installed which makes for a very lazy driver if you don't regularly drive cars which don't hold your hand to this extent.

I thought the same of the Fabia as you can be in 5th doing 40mph and then brake down to 30mph (revs drop to about 800rpm) and the car will accelerate to back above 1000rpm. Not sure what causes it, but I know none of my previous cars have done this :)

Only managed to stall mine when not paying attention pulling away on a hill start. Otherwise you should be able to change all the way up to fifth without touching the throttle. Could be the clutch is being a bit sharp as its new? Just give it a few more revs - you should be OK then.

The newer pd lumps are way easier to stall than the old indirect lumps.

I have managed to stall the Superb quite a few times, and thats after quite a while of ownership. Problem (if it is) is that the newer modern diesels have masses of torque, but at a slightly higher rev range compared to old school chuggers/non-pd,s which peaked torque very early in the rev range.

It also has something to do with drivers wanting their diesels to be more llike petrol engines.

the other day i was waiting to turn right, when a bus driver flashed me to let me go,

i then promptly stalled it, :o , bang in the middle of the road.

guess i was so astonished that a bus driver let me go!

Thanx folks. I'd agree with Kentish. If I rev it up a bit, it's not a problem, but at lower revs I tend to get into trouble, especially at roundabouts/traffic lights. With the old 1.8T, I'd be off like bat out of hell with a nudge of the accel., but with the TDi, I just end up blocking traffic. Once the revs are up, it's OK. Guess I just miss my 1.8T ...

funnily enough i find the 1.8t prone to stalling..... but i just have to be different..
