noise when starting and engaging 1st

Featured Replies

All apart from the 1.2 chain-cam three-cylinder engines need new timing belts and tensioners every 4 years or 60,000 miles whichever comes first.

Fit asnd finish quality issues emerging: Dashboard vibrations against front windscreen, front electric windows glass vibrations, nearside front vibration from engine when starting and engaging in 1st gear at clutch biting point when ready to move forward and squeaky accelerator pedal.

Poor plastics, trim coming loose: front windows switches pop out of armrest socket along with wiring.

I copied this from honest john website. My car has the nearside front vibration from engine when starting and engaging in 1st gear at clutch biting point when ready to move forward. Not so much the vibration but the noise is a bit worrying. It sounds like a clunk. Does anyone else have this and more importantly is it anything to be worried about and if so will it be covered by the warranty? Rather than the "they all do that" line???

P.S mine is a 1.4 tdi 80 2 estate.

i have the same issue... on first gear there is a lot of vibration but then as the ride goes on the vibrations stop

geeze people over here must be calling me a snag

but hey i paid quite a lot for the car ... so that gives me the right

Chase, no-one is calling you a snag! It's important to hear your views if you think you have a problem.

I don't have the the noise or vibration on my 1.4TDI. The gearbox is of course on the left of the car which may indicate it is just clutch judder as the drive is taken up. If so it can make a noise also...and if it's bad...it's a warranty job. It may also just be the clutch drive disc sticking on it's splines. I've experienced this on a Ford I owned just a year or two back. With use it will most likely go away as mine did on the Ford. Although some more knowledgeable about the Fabia will no doubt be able to give a better opinion than me.

i was also told that when the fabia starts first tiime for the day or when the engine is cold it will make a lot of nice

i just feel that i have not got the quality for the price i have paid

there is another vehicle in the market called the optra magnum and it is a TDI engine and has a top speed of 190km no noise and the ride is very special

and it comes with 3 year warranty unlike the skoda which come for 1 year warranty

I'm worried now. If lummox is knocking about, have you had any experience of this noise. Also any dealers like allams, if you have any advice I'd really like to hear from you.

Thanks in advance!

I'm wondering if this noise on releasing the clutch could be linked to the problem that existed with the first fabia ...and especially the Vrs. This car had a clonking noise that came from the front nearside area when going over bumps and potholes. Now this might, on first inpection appear to be totally unrelated to the problem in this thread, but I dont think so because the problem as I understood it with the fabia vrs was that the engine bearer that supports the gearbox actually bottomed out so that there was metal against metal contact when the engine/gearbox movement was at a maximum.

This scenario could possibly be taking place with the new fabia when taking up the clutch in 1st gear , especially if there is a tendancy for a little clutch judder.

I point the finger of accusation at the engine bearer on the gearbox but moreover at Skoda for letting this problem carry over from the first fabia.

Jaxx, I doubt it is anything to be very worried about. How many miles has your car covered now? Your car is new and sometimes new cars do make 'settling in noises', sometimes suspension bushes creak or squeak, clutches can be a bit harsh, brakes not so good until run in etc etc. Even engines are a bit noisier when new than when run in.and they can vibrate more too, until a few miles are on the clock. I would ask your garage about it...but remember you have a 3 year warranty so you should not be worried. Skoda are brilliant to deal with and make a good product. You may have a noisey drive shaft on the left hand side taking up the drive making the clunk...but I doubt it.

Dieseline, that's a good thought. But I haven't come across this on any Mk2 fabs yet. And mine doesn't make it either. Worth investigating though if it's non of the other obvious things.

For estate man my car has covered 1030 miles so far. I've noticed the engine is both quieter and smoother but my problem noise has remained. I worry that what is causing the noise may be replaced but what it is clonking against won't be and so my car is still damaged. Needless to say, I am a worrier... especially when it comes to over £12.5k of car...

Thank you for your advice so far guys!!!

Jaxx, take her into the garage to let them have a listen. In my experience, speaking as an ex-techy, very few of these sorts of noises are serious. It may be something as simple as a cable or pipe banging the bulkhead. Could be the exhaust system not quite mounted correctly and hitting something under the car as you take up the drive. Knocks and sounds travel around the car too making it awkward for the untrained person to pinpoint the exact problem. The garage will put your mind at rest and cure the problem. Believe me, the Fab 2 is a well sorted motor so it won't be anything to worry about...just a teething problem.
