Standard H4 bulbs pants in vRS, so....

Featured Replies

I've just bought some Phillips X-Treme 80% + jobbies, from power bulbs, which come with a spare H4 along with some blue vision sidelight bulbs also FOC bonus.

Having had HID Xenons in my last octy the standard headlights of the vRS i have now is somewhat lacking i have to say

will probably fit them within next couple of days and see if there is a difference :)

Hopefully you will see a difference. To me the biggest downside to the mk1 octi is the poor headlights, I too have fitted some better bulbs (Night Breakers) and the blue vision bulbs and they have made a huge difference.

cheers for that Matt, will let you all know what they are like... i dont think i'll ever be fully satisfied though, unless i do a conversion to HID Xenons, whats you've once had, and all that....

The blue white sidelights do make a difference to the light IME. Of course, that might be partly because I had "black glass" sidelight bulbs when I took them out to change them?

I've got Phillips Xtreme ones in mine but not pleased with them at all - they seem very dull, especially in areas with street lights and other cars.

It's been suggested moisture in the lens is affecting them, either that or the headlights need to be adjusted to a slightly higher level because the filaments in the bulbs are different so cast most of the light lower than the standard H4s.

My sister has some amazingly bright H4s in her Seat Leon, very blue/white. I might see if I can get them out and see what make they are.

I've seen it claimed recently that you should have your headlights re-aimed every time you change bulbs due to manufacturing differences. CE's report above is the only evidence I've got to support this in about 30 years (as against 1 for the time since I first saw the claim).

Halfords are doing their Extreme bulbs BOGOF at the mo. They've made a huge difference- worked out at around £9 ea- bargain!

I was thinking this tonight my lights are crap! with the rain and other car's headlights i cant see much at all! Defo time for some new bulbs. ;)

Osram Nightbreakers are good, I have a set on mine.

Osram silverstars were excellent in my MK I

Agreed the standard headlights are rubbish

Like andyvr6 says halfords are doing a bogof on there 90% brighter xenon bulbs and they have made a vast imrovement in my mk1 vrs.

Just changed them literally about 40mins ago... straight away and even in the daylight, the sidelight bulbs that you get free are soooo much brighter than standard sidelights...

If am honest in the daylight i couldnt overly tell the difference with the Phillips X-Treme bulbs, ya see i only changed the one side to be able to see both... maybe a little brighter, probably a whiter crisp light... will let you know more when i get behind the wheel and drive tonight!

and even in the daylight

They have daylight in Sheffield at 4pm? :D

ok maybe a little before lol picky (that'll teach me for not posting it straight away eh)

I have the Philips Xtremes in mine and they are an improvement. I am planning to wire the bulbs directly to the battery with good thick cable. Hope this makes another step forward.

I must change the side lights also for another improvement.

If all this does not make the improvements I want I will look at getting some spots for the front, thinking of semi-hiding them under the front number plate.

The std lights are dangerous.

Wow.... just gone out for a drive tonight... and i can actually see the road ahead... if anyone is in any doubt, i would personally say buy some.. the sidelights are a fair bit brighter too.

I could tell a good difference straight away tonight, a slightly better coverage too, but a hell of a lot brighter than the standards!!!:thumbup:
