Off the line....

Featured Replies

Is it just me or can I get away alot faster if I slip the clutch in 1st and 2nd?

With my foot on the throttle I can get/keep the turbo spooling, and then just feed the clutch in while keeping the revs up and adjusting for traction.

I hated doing it, because it can't be good for the clutch. But it was so much quicker from stand still.

Normally I'd just get off the clutch asap, and boot it...

Or is it the dual mass shindingle messing with my head?!

Even a stock TDi110 (experience, and it makes similar peak torque to the 1.8T180) or vRS has enough torque to overwhelm the front tyres if you dump the clutch too hard.

The typical 0-60 benchmark tactics do a car no favours whatsoever - you're not bothered with longevity, so sidestepping the clutch at 5k isn't a problem. I suppose it also depends on the traction control system and how obstructive it is under load. In theory the slip should only be helpful in first unless you're short shifting, as the revs will be high enough by the time you hit second to keep the turbo on boost. How far do you push it before grabbing second?
