In-gear acceleration 30-50, 40-60, 50-70mph

Featured Replies

Car magazines used to measure the in-gear acceleration of cars at set speeds, such as 30-50, 40-60 and 50-70mph, as well as in various gears (3rd, 4th, 5th). They rarely do this now. Do members' have any idea what these figures are for their own cars?

This information is far more useful to most people than a 0-60mph time in X amount of secs. I suspect these figures would also flatter TDI Fabias in particular! Any thoughts/info?

Thanks

Quoting from memory of an Autocar long term report of a Fabia VRS Skoda they got 20-40 in second in about 2.5 secs (standard car not chipped) and 50-70 mph in fourth in about 5 and a half seconds so yes the VRS has some excellent in gear times, god knows what the mapped cars are capable of as Autocar even got 7.2 secs to sixty in a standard Fabia VRS.:)

Here's a few to start...

Autocar - Fabia 1.4 16v test 18/04/07:

30-50 in 3rd = 6.3s in 4th = 9.8s

40-60 in 4th = 10.2s in 5th = 15.3s

50-70 in 5th = 15.3s

WhatCar - Fabia 1.4 16v test June 07:

30-50 in 3rd = 6.7s in 4th = 10.4s in 5th = 15.6s

50-70 in 3rd = 7.8s in 4th = 11.2s in 5th = 18.6s

Autocar - Fabia 1.9TDi Estate test 09/01/08:

30-50 in 3rd = 5.0s in 4th = 7.8s

40-60 in 4th = 7.6s in 5th = 10.2s

50-70 in 5th = 11.5s

WhatCar - Fabia 1.9TDi Estate test April 08:

30-50 in 3rd = 4.5s in 4th = 6.9s in 5th = 12.5s

50-70 in 3rd = 6.3s in 4th = 7.7s in 5th = 10.7s

Found some Roomsters as well but same engines as above so probably not worth adding!

Does show the torque of the big diesel makes it relatively quick when accelerating in high gear.

Can't find anything for the 1.2s 1.6 or 1.4TDis.

Thanks very much. V. interesting. All that diesel torque makes such a difference. What about figures for the 1.4 TDI? I've never seen any and it would be interesting to compare those with the 1.9 TDI. Anyone?

I remember seeing 2 sets of 1.4 tdi figures on ae website under the group tests. one against kia, volvo, renault and a few other estates. There's another one on same site too but don't have time to look. Both were from several months ago.

No idea for 1.4 TD but I have a Fabia VRS and jumping into an 80 bhp Fabia 1.4 TDI didn't leave me feeling short changed. It is an eager little engine (but for gawds sake avoid the 70 bhp model as severely down on torque compared to 80 bhp, drove one in a Roomster and it was nasty):)

Just had a look on ae. For 1.4 tdi 80 the figures are as follows...

0-60 13.1

30-70 through gears 15.6

30-50 5.5 in 3rd, 8.2 in 4th

50-70 12 in 5th

For comparison from the whatcar mag the figures of roomster 1.4 tdi 80 are

0-60 14

30-70 through gears 15.4

30-50 5.7 in 3rd, 9.0 in 4th, 15.9 in 5th

50-70 10 in 4th, 11.8 in 5th.

Pretty similar but I can't see how in any way the heavier roomster could be quicker than the fabia. The driver of the roomster must have been snappier with the gear changes. Hope that helps!

Thanks very much, Jaxx. Interestingly this shows that the gap between the 1.4 TDI and the 1.9TDI is not as as big as I thought, particularly up to 50mph. Although the majority opinion on this site seems to be that the 1.9 TDI is worth the extra cash (given the mpg difference is negligible) the 1.4 TDI does offer cheaper road tax, a low ticket price and it pollutes less (also important!). It's also got no DPF filter (unlike the Greenline) which is vulnerable to bunging up. For anyone wanting a bit of driving verve plus planet-friendly CO2 emissions, either the 1.4 TDI or Greenline version look decent buys. I don't think they're the poor cousins (to the 1.9 TDI) some reckon.

I have the 1.4 tdi 80 estate and I would have loved the 1.9 but it made less financial sense for us. I am more than satisfied with the engines punch. This is after coming from a 1.8 115hp escort. I thought that was quick but the fabia acccelerates as hard or even harder but from much lower revs. I'm more than happy with the performance. It is more than adequate.
