1.4 mpi not getting warm !

Featured Replies

hi hopefull some one can help me out here ,

fabia 1.4mpi 2001 ,28k ,over the last few months the water temp has not come up to temp on a few occasions , so i fitted a new thermostat yesterday, thinking that was the problem .i ran the car up after fitting it and it came upto temp no probs.

wife went to work in it today (aprox 7miles each way ) and the temp never came up at all .

ive read the posts regaurding the temp sender giving problems ,but ive got no fault lights on.

has anyone got any ideas ?

cheers kev

Did you not replace the thermostat as a complete unit? It normally comes with a temp sensor.

no i only replaced the thermostat at a cost of £16 from andrew pages ,they quoted me £65 +vat for the full unit ?.

i m baffled as to how the temp senser stops the engine temp coming up ?

Took Ross a matter of seconds to change my temp sensor...

it's a seriously easy fix... Coolant temp sensor. Mine did the same... Only after 45,000 miles tho.

i m baffled as to how the temp senser stops the engine temp coming up ?

Are you really? The temp sensor doesnt actually stop the temperature of the engine going up, it just stops the gauge moving.

Since the thermostat's new, it must be that 'stat body's gone, which - incidentally - should have made it extremely difficult to fit your new 'stat...??? In colder temps, the constant open-circuit to the radiator will prevent the car warming up...

I've just sorted this on my 1.4mpi - one of a list of jobs! Exactly the same symptoms.

New thermostat, housing, sensor, plus coolant bottle, system flush and new coolant. Good as new now. Nice heater when it works properly!

Just got the wishbone bushes and timing chain to sort now. Plus the leaky back doors. Hopefully that will be it for a while. :u)

£65 is well worth it if it fixes the fault first time plus you get a new temp sensor.

Wow! That's a very good price!

I replcaed the Stat in my girlfriends car last week, the old stat was jammed and one of the lugs was snapped in the housing. The new stat (once I figured it out) doesn't use the lugs, it seems to just press against the inside of the housing thats fixed to the engine.

However, the car is still going cold it would appear. The needle barely gets above 1/4 (half way to normal), unless you stop and start the engine again once its warmed up, then the needle rises to almost half way before drifting back down slowly while driving.

Is this a faulty temperature sender?

Dave.

Are you sure you've been given the right thermostat? I did my wife's a matter of weeks ago, and the new 'stat used the lugs just like the old one!?!

IME, a faulty sender means the needle on the gauge sometimes / always stays on 'cold' whereas a 'wobbly' needle means there's something up with the thermostat and the coolant's circulating through the radiator whether it needs to or not...

well , finally got it sorted today

fitted the complete unit frm skoda today, when i removed the old unit the new thermstat that i had fitted earlyer this week had come apart and jammed up in the housing .

the new housing had the more standard type of thermostat fitted rather than the thin plastic barrel type.

had a few problems with air in the system but all sorted now:) .

thanks to all for your help and info

I think Skoda parts are very reasonable. I've had to get quotes for various parts and I have been really quite surprised.:)

I have a similar problem.

The temp gauge does it in the middle but it takes a while to get their.

How long's a while? Bearing in mind the weather's getting colder, if the needle gets to the middle and stays there, there's probably nothing wrong!
