RPM Drop for few seconds at idle - Engine Vibrates

Featured Replies

Hello guys,

I have a 2002 Octavia L&K 1.8T with 41,000 Kms. Engine is factory stock. Does not have any mod to the car computer or chip

My problem is that when I am driving and then stop for example at a red light the RPMs drop for a few seconds to around 600 then the engine vibrates and then the RPM rise to normal level around 1000. This happen very fast in a few seconds and I note it because the engine vibrates for the low RPM.

This happend every time I stop at a red light, or at a cross or when ever I need to stop.

Also, this only happend with the A/C on

I Took yesterday the car to the Skoda Dealer and drive the car with one of the mechanics in order that he saw the problem.

Today I call him and he say he does not find any code on the VAG computer. He toll me also that he found that the Throttle Valve Butterfly was dirty and he will going to clean it and drive the car to see if the problem go away.

I need to cal them tomorrow.................... BUT what you think is the problem? Maybe you guys can give me a Tip in order to hekp the Skoda mechanic

Problem Fixed

HI

May be worth checking the MAF , these dont always come up with a code on the computer

Then again , if the throttle body is dirty , a clean and recalibration may be do the trick

Good luck

Sarah

How's it like on startup, get any shudder? They are terrible for it, but the throttle body needing cleaning and have and adaptation performed in vag-com and the usual leaking pipes under the centre of the inlet manifold and the 'y' join (any dealer will know what parts you want, common failure) let air in and mess up idle, till the ecu compensates so worth checking out.

Plenty of 'shudder' threads on here, one with some good pictures of the pipes mentioned which are not that easy to get to.

The other thing I'm wondering about, particularly if the shuddering only happens with the air on, or the car on lock, is the idle stabilisation.

Well, I can them today and the mechanic say they clean the throttle body and do a recalibration.............They drive the car and does not fill the RPM drop problem (lumpy idle, shudder).

Tomorrow I will get there to pick up my car so let see what I find. I hope they already fix it:rolleyes:

Hey Greg,

Well my happiness only lasted one day after picking up my car at the Skoda Dealer. My 1.8T is still shuddering.:surprised

I was thinking on doing my own Throttle body cleaning with Carburator cleaning. Eaven that the Skoda Mechanics say they cleaned. But I dont have a VAG computer to to the adaptation after cleaning it myself:confused:

Whats your advice?

Also Greg, about the the usual leaking pipes under the centre of the inlet manifold and the 'y' join that you mentioned, were are they located in order that I can check them myself? I was looking for pics here but dont find them. Can you help me and point me. My engine is a 2002 1.8T (AGU Code)

BTW, I dont have shuddering on start up. I only have shuddering when I am driving and then stop for example at a red light, the RPMs drop for a few seconds to around 600 then the engine vibrates and then the RPM rise to normal level around 1000.

Is like the car computer reaction time to compensate is slow and thats why I fill the engine vibrate.

THX,

Isaac

Hi Isaac,

Removing the TB and giving it a thorough cleaning yourself till it all shines inside is a good idea. I always use VCDS to adapt, but I vaguely remember a manual method - maybe you can search it up or locate someone with Vag-Com near you.

The pictures of the split pipe under the manifold are in this thread:

http://briskoda.net/octavia-i/vrs-error-code-171-bank1-lean-please-help/84522/

You need to remove the front plastic cover at the front of the intake manifold and a couple other bits to get (sort of) to it, very hard to get to. Check all the pipes under there. Also the breather plastic hoses on the right hand side as you look at it under the bonnet going to a 'y'.

Do a intake leak test if you can - fill the intake with compressed air with the engine off and go looking for leaks. Also, carefully used as it can cause fire, spraying solvent round the pipes and unions with engine idling can reveal leaks which make the engine shudder as it sucks the solvent in.

I imagine you can also log the requested vs actual throttle body angle in vag-com when driving, or try another throttle body, to see if it's that. Also a bit crude but if you can rig a bypass of the throttle body giving enough air to maintain an idle of around 900rpm when hot by bleeding that much air taken from after the MAF to after the TB, the throttle body should be closed and thus the throttle body shouldn't be able to make the revs drop below 900rpm. If you are still getting the shudder and struggling to idle it's likely not the TB but something else.

I take it there are no current fault codes?

Well guys, I confirm that my problem was that the TB throttle body was very dirty with a lot of carbon deposits. I remove it and clean it and now the shuddering is fixed.

Thank you guys for you advice and tips,

Isaac

BTW, here is a post from another forum that explain and have pics of how to clean the TB How to : Clean your throttle body - uk-mkivs

didnt the dealer clean the tb then?????? would be asking them why if they hadnt:mad:

I would too, They said it was dirty and were going to clean it and didn`t. I used to have a lot of problems with throttle bodys and idle control valves on my vectra and it was sorted with a good dose of carb cleaner.

Sir, I have a problem in Skoda Octavia 2005 Diesel car. I have also cleared the throttle body that did not even go away.
