Rear Brakes

Featured Replies

Hello rotodiesel

Your dead right, I did ask head Skoda mechanic over the phone, and he quite simply said, their clockwise retract both sides. He added you will need the special retract tool (we have) to push piston whilst turning.

Clockwise ?

Can anyone else confirm this, natural process to undo anything is anti clockwise, I'm pretty sure I wound mine back anti clock last time I did them and the whole braking system has been fine since.

Definitely clockwise (you are screwing the piston back IN the caliper)

If you have the correct type of piston retracter tool, then trying to wind in anti-clockwise will be quite akward if not impossible as that tool will only press off the other side of the fist if wound clockwise.

Just about to do the rear brake pads on mine and was checking the manual for instructions and saw under the notes (see attached graphic)

When resetting the piston with a piston resetting device, the automatic reset in the brake calliper is destroyed

Does anyone know what this means? Sounds a little scary, but I'm sure it's not

Dumbo translation. When you screw in the pistons, the handbrake setting for the pads you've just taken out is lost. So what - you started the job in order to fit new pads.

This job is dead easy if you use the right tool - don't bodge. The trick is to preload the piston inwards with the jackscrew on the winding tool as you screw it back. If you don't do this, the cone inside the piston will turn and it will not be possible to reset it. It's better to retract the pistons only by the minimum amount required to fit the new pads (don't damage the dust boots). By doing this, the handbrake will regain its adjustment much more quickly.

Wedge the brake pedal down with a piece of wood (use the driver's seat with the adjuster) and open the bleed nipple when you retract the piston. This keeps dirty fluid out of the ABS unit.

The Laser piston winding tool fits OK(ish) and GSF sell Textar pads which are identical to the OE fitment.
