Car Does Not like 5th Gear

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone can help me?? i drive a octavia vrs 1.8 t on a 54 reg with 120k on the clock...

just been travelling back home on the motorway, and i put the car in 5th gear bout 8 times and each time after a minute or so or a few minutes it would go into neutral from fifth... i dont have these problems with any other gear.....

just wondering if anyone has had a problem similar to this.. and where would be the best place to would start: Gear Selector / Adjuster?

:confused::confused:

My guess is the 5th gear sychroniser (or selector fork) is chewed up. Selecting this gear will feel different and may be impossible to select whilst stationary.

think its time to take the car to the garage, if it is the gear synchro is it a gear box out job? Just bit gutted really, manage sort out hazard switch clicking and then this starts......

Afraid so. You have two options. An exchange-rebuild or a repair/rebuild by a gearbox specialist (or good mechanic). Removing the gearbox and replacing it is a fairly straightforward process.

I know this won't solve the problem long term, but I've had boxes that get funny at high miles where an oil change of the gearbox fixes it short term.

It might be worth doing one and then saving up for the box to be repaired at a specialist.

After searching the good old tinternet... i think i found my problem!!!!

RAV4World - :: View topic - 5th Gear Popping out Self-Repair

im going to book it back in the garage and get it sorted, i know the above is on a rav 4... but its suffering the same problems as mine... and he cured his...........

looks highly likely to be the same problem.. Guess its Gear box to come out!!!

oh well, dont cars just let you down at the times you dont need them to most!!!!

hope this of some use to someone else if they come across this!!!:)

I didn't see this originally, but the only time I've ever experienced a vehicle jumping out of gear like you describe, the problem was a knackered synchromesh on that gear. This is more usual on the intermediates, usually 2 or 3, in any application, but there's no logical reason for it not happening on any synchronised ratio.

Alternatively, maybe the car just doesn't like Tom Ford? ;)

Just one thought, what are the engine/gearbox mountings like and how is the shift actuated?

If it is a rod rather than a pair of cables, it could be down to engine movement.

Had a Saab 900 that only popped out third, that was tired engine mounts.

And a Saab 9000 that was close to popping out of 5th, the top mount/torque arm mount was knackered, so as the engine swung back and forth the stick would swagger about too.

Most or all Octys have cable linkages.

Ah right, scratch that Idea. I couldn't remember been a while since I had my Octie 1 and I haven't found the right Superb yet for the money.

My car has 120k on the clock.... it is a ex-police car with high mileage - 120k...... so im guessing its done a lot of its work on the motor way in 5th gear....... my feelings are towards the synchro on the fifth gear, just not holding it gear....... guess it is a gear box out job..... has anyone pictorials/photos for removal of gearbox and any pics of the inside of the gearbox.... so i know whats involved....

Muchly appreciated you getting back to me...

My thoughts are that there is play in shaft for 5th along with worn synchromeshes.

My Mk2 Octy would pop out of 1st gear on the over run, company i was buying it from replaced the gearbox mounts to no avail, even though it was fubard. So gearbox out job and refurbish, cost £400 as i made sure i had the reciept for any comeback, but 7k on there has been no problems.

Thought so..... booked in at the garage for gearbox out and refurb...... ill let you know if synchro on fifth was worn causing this problem....... everything points to this being the cause of the trouble.... as externally everything seems solid....... mounts.. gear linkage....... ill post some pics of the problem parts so that if anyone comes across this problem they know what there looking at...

Might get the clutch done too if the gear box is out.... might as well..... heard a rattling noise this morning.... like the pressure plate..... only does it when the clutch is engaged... once you put your foot down on the clutch through out the rev range no rattles / metalicy noise at all.....

Mmmmnnn there is something not right between the clutch and the gearbox.......

Think its getting expensive this car only had it near 5 months. and list of jobs iv had done are adding up:

Rear suspension £80

Cambelt, £250

Service, £100

Coils, £120

Hazard Switch Relay £30

Two new front Tyres £100

Gear Box Oil Change £20

Now looking at Gearbox refurb, and possibly clutch..... mmmnnn, possibly near £600,

This car is starting to become the bain of my life...........

I hope it gives me some trouble free motoring when i get it back!! (hopefully with the issues sorted!!)

So Car has gone into the garage......... and results are as follows:

1.Gearbox fifth gear synchro worn....

2.Gearbox Bell Housing leaking Gearbox Oil

Result - I require new Gear box!

and to top the matter off just before xmas

When i bought the car was told the car had just been fitted with a new clutch... so was surprised when i heard the pressure plate kissing and scratching and screeching...

Spoke to my local mechanic.. who ive known a few years and guess what.... car has been fitted with a incorrect clutch....

so now

I require a new clutch... with a new mass dual fly wheel........

Im hoping that this will solve my problems now......... if i can get pictures of the my worn gear synchro i will post them up.... along with the wrong clutch that was fitted....

Gutted! Sorry to hear that Glen, be interested to see what you find though!

Ahh mate gutted for you :(

As it needs the fly wheel as well id go for the conversion kit that you can get as it will save you a fortune

Got me car back from the garage..... new gearbox as fifth gear synchro was worn, and the bell housing was leaking, oil was seaping through onto the clutch....., and amazingly the clutch fitted 4 months ago was the wrong clutch............ had the car back a few days now... and feels as smooth as anything....

Least we all know that the fifth gear synchro on a octavia box can get worn and cause problems.......
