How to clean cooling system (from the inside)

Featured Replies

i wanted to share this tip someone gave me a while ago, it to clean completely the cooling system of you car, from rust, hard water deposits contaminants and others

Theres this chemical named Carbolic Oil, is the main ingredient in a product thats know here in the Dominican Republic as "Creolina"

what you do is you remove all the coolant from your system and afterward put 1 litter of Carbolic Oil or "Creolina" and to it of with clean water (it realy doent matter if its distiled, tap or hard water) and you run it for a couple of weeks. The heat and the carbolic oil are going to remove all the rust and hard water deposits from within your engine, i leave the heater on so it cleans also the heater core

what you will find is that this mix of water and carbolic oil is going to get progresively dirtier, from milky white to coffee and cream looking, thats the very very small particles of rus and hard water deposits that are removed from inside the engine and are suspendend in the solution.

Afterward flush the system with a lot of water and then fill it with coolant.

i hope your joking right?

phenol (carbolic acid) is toxic, and it will eat all your hoses in your cooling system.

oh, and it makes no difference if your heater is on or off, the water is still pumping though it all the time

yes :( it is toxi i feel very ashamed i did not mantion this, is also used as a disinfectant and a cleaning agent, there is a soap here named "escudo" that uses this creolina or carbolic oil to treat skin fungus and infections and protect from bateria...

but your diluting it with water in a 1 to 4 ratio, also the creolina is not 100% carbolic oil so its realy something like a 1 to 6 or 8 ratio

a lot of people use this here in the dominican republic, but... i know that this is a 3rd world country and thing we do here might not have a lot of logic in other places, but as i said, i wanted to share this info since i know is not something a lot of people do outside the Dominican Republic, but it does work, and my hoses are fine, this is the 4th time i have done this procedure, ive done it on all my cars when i purchaced them and on a friends car that was overheating...

sorry if my advices seems dangerous or nuts... then again a forum is to bounce ideas and share knowledge, i just wanted to put a little grain on that here...

right i've just looked it up, creolina is mostly isopropyl alcohol,

i wouldn't put that in a hot engine either, it can deflgrate when exposed to an oxidiser (air:O) when it's heated.

There are products sold that claim to do this such as Holts speed flush. I've used holts speed flush with no obvious problems, although no obvious benefits either. Don't fancy ripping everything apart to look inside and do before and after etc :D

Changing the coolant regularly and ensuring the correct concentration ratio of coolant to water should help prevent rust and deposits etc anyway.

it does degrade, after a couple of weeks its doent keep cleaning, so if you need or want to clean your engine more you would have to change and re-fill, but to me is just a care for cars that might have used water instead of coolant (a lot of people ride here with water instead of coolant) so i only do it one time, and clean the radiator after that, there is realy no need sincer i've been taught to only use coolant, ther is one that is not green but red, thats the one i like

well, i did, the person who taught me this trick put it on my car wich had the cap right on top of the radiator and you could see inside and after using it and flushing it the radiator was sparking inside, like someone polish it, and the aluminium thermometer housing was sparklin as well, thats whats sold me, and ofcourse, id did cool a lot better (though that want the reason i did it) lost 50 buck on that bet i remember (50 pesos in that time was like 3 dollars)

it does degrade

deflegrate... not degrade:rolleyes:
