HELP. how does this go back in. 1.3 mpi

Featured Replies

Hey Hey. I bought a favorit pickup a couple of weeks back and today I decided to have a look at the chain because it was noisy.

I removed the 2 10mm bolts from what I thought was an inspection cover and took it out only to find it has a gear on the end of a shaft.

I tried for about half an hour but could'nt get it back in. it was getting dark so I left it.

It seems like it needs to mesh with the gear on the end of the camshaft.

In the morning I'm going to jack it up, put it in gear and turn one of the wheels to see if the two will mesh.

Is this right or is there something I have over looked?

Any advice would be gratefully recieved

Thanks

Lee

Not quite sure what you've taken off, but to get at the chain you need to take the sump off. Only thing I can think you've removed is the distributor - but I guess I'm wrong.

I assume it is the distibutor shaft you have removed. Was it from the top left of engine (as you look straight on at the car)?

It can be a bit fiddly to get back in and you need to do so when the engine is at TDC (no.1 cylinder top dead centre) and then line the rotar arm up with the little notch on the top of the dizzy and turn it back a tad and you should be able to get it back it... it will turn right as it goes back in and engases with the gear.

Yes it's the distibutor shaft. I'll have a go. Thanks

I've been trying this for hours and it just won't go in.

I have definitely got the engine at TDC on the inlet stroke on cy1 (the one nearest the chain.)

Does anyone have any suggestions

Thanks

i thought it spun the oil pump when i done my timing chain..

it does. It's not a distributor shaft as i first thought.

This is what the distributor should look like... That should be quite easy to fit and the main problem would be getting the timing right.

It's not the distributor it's the oil pump drive gear I'm struggling with.

I've spent several hours on this today and had a mate who is a mechanic come over and still no joy.

Any body in kent think thay can do it, Let me know. I'll pay

Easiest way then is probably to take the sump off and drop the oil pump thingy inside, and may as well replace the chain etc at the same time.

Ok thanks.

My auto data cd is no use would a haynes manual have any useful information on romoving the oil pump. I've searched on here and can't find any relevant threads.

Thanks

Haynes does mention removing oil pump. Having a quick look appears to be...

Drain oil

Remove sump

Undo four bolts holding oil pickup strainer and one on a bracket

Lower this and oil pump gears will drop out.

Apparently there may be a gasket needing renewal on the pickup strainer

if u mean getting the top bit back in with the kog on the end disconnect the wiring haness going to the coil, then turn it over for a split second then it should go in..

just a matter of getting them lined up :)
