I want better headlights for my vRS. Any suggestions?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Basically, I just got a VRS and and I love every part of it apart from the head lights at night. I would some that have that really blue penetrating light so that I can see perfect at night, also like the slight blue tint you get.

I have no idea where to start so if you can help would be awesome.

Well I was hoping that i could just get new bulbs or something but out of intrest would you have a pic of what your xenon kit looks like and how much it cost?

I take it you bought a new bumper for the headlight washers and also retro fitted the self levelling eqpt??????:rolleyes::rolleyes:

The Department of Transport says that for a aftermarket HID Headlamp to be road legal in the UK it must be:

  • E-marked to confirm that it has undergone stringent safety checks
  • Fitted to a vehicle with a self levelling system - either in the headlight unit or in the vehicle’s suspension
  • Fitted to a Vehicle with a Wash/Wipe Headlight System
  • The Headlight must be in good working order, kept clean and correctly aligned

Cheers

Dave.

i payed £120 from essex racing, it replices the original bulb and connects in to the original wiring harness add them for my old cupra an tock them off an fitted them to my fab vrs,had the kit for over a year and it has been fault less, mine is a 800 k kit, you can get them on ebay cheaper. i dont no how to do pic but if tell me i be happy to show you

dont get phillips xtreme bulbs, i just did and they suck.

let me know if you find anything better!

hi no washers fitted. i wounderd about that coz my lupo gti got got them with xenon lights. but in the instuction book it said nothing about hedlamp washers and no mot inspectors have said anything about washers when i asked them

I've never really understood why people are so determined to want to improve the headlights on the fabia so much that they're willing to spend a fortune on xenons (unless a factory fitted option) - I've always thought they're more than adequate and can see more than in most cars at night time, including a volvo s40 with xenon headlights which I was most disappointed with?

i fitted some retro fit HID lamps... they however are not road legal but give off a nice colour - i chose 6k.... never been flashed once

Im naughty i know

I upgraded the dipped beam on my vRS to the Osram Nightbreaker. Much brighter, whiter light which seems to reach further up the road. And they're called "Nightbreakers" for goodness sake - what more reason do you need?!!

Upgraded the main beam bulbs to Phillips Rally (100w) bulbs. They are illegal for UK use as they're nearly double the 55w legal limit, but I've never had any problems with them (passed two MOT's now) and they are only used on the main beam which is always dipped very quickly so as not to dazzle oncoming drivers.

HTH

MOT legal and ROAD legal are totally different. You can have red headlights and pass an MOT as long as the beam pattern is ok. You can paint the outside of the windscreen black and pass an MOT.

Doesn't make either of those things legal on the road.

Not quite '100% road legal' then. ;)

Here's a link to the department of transport website which confirms your's are not road legal.

I've got and had an HID upgrade in all my 4 Fabia's and never had a problem on MOT's and very rarely flashed. Very worthy upgrade this time of year

Well I like the lights on my car and there pretty good allready its just I would prefer a cleaner looking light if that makes sense rather than the yellowish look they have at the moment. The other thing is When car are coming towards me I sometimes strugle to see. Could be that im still adjusting i suppose.

More than anything tho i just want something that gives off a cleaner light as I think might help with oncoming traffic and make the car look nicer too.

In our Octy 2 the xenons are ace (factory option) and wouldnt buy a car without them.

When I get in the works Mondeo, its so dark it's like 'who turned off the lights'. Running Halfords Pro brilliance (30% xenon gas) made things better, but the ford's halogen lights are shockingly bad.

Either get OEM HID's or if you cant afford it, get Osram Nightbreaker's. Which arnt as good as HID's but loads better than standard bulbs.

Dont get aftermarket HID's. From my understanding, my local DVLA are checking cars at the end of a duel carageway I travel on (checking for red fuel too), and are getting cars impounded! So for those people who do have aftermarkets, or 100w bulbs, just be carefull.

HTH,

I fitted the Phillips Xtreme's and think they're great! Far better than the standard bulbs. They were also the Autocar best-buy IIRC.

Fitted aftermarket HID kit to my Fabia.

Vision was good.

But kept getting flashed all the time, and I even had then aligned.

Waste of time IMO.

They actually look crap and chavvy on a Fabia anyway, because you just get a big blob of blue in the light rather than a nice concentrated beam.

Bought the vRS few months back, after driving the old man's new AMG Merc for a while the lights on the vRS seemed poor to be honest, I bought the 8000k HID conversion kit from Awesome gti. I do alot of night and early morning driving and living in the lake district it rains alot; the HID conversion has totally transformed the driving in the dark and low visibility experience, even the old man is now jealous.:D No washer jets or self levellers, so will be illegal. For me, the benefits completely out-weigh the risk, especially living in the lake district where they're hardly any police.

Are your lights projector lamps as i read somewhere on the net that it doesnt make much difference on a projector lamp but a normal lamp it will make a big difference. i maybe wrong

I do alot of night driving and my X -tremes fitted to my fabia are excellent, i cannot fault them.

Ive thought about the HID route, but I really cant be bothered with the hassle if i get stopped.

In my personal experience of driving with HID's you need to use main beam MORE than with halogens due to the sharp cut off.

I just had my dipped beam angled high enough within the light sensor at the MOT station, without causing glare.

Might try the Philips Extremes first then as may be cheaper option. GUys what is OEM HID by the way. SOrry for dumb question lol. Just if i do end up going to skoda garage and asking for them would be cool if i know what to ask for.

Are the Philips extreme dip beam and main beam or just one of those?

Also i meant to ask do i need to get a particular sort of Philips Extremes so they fit, do they require any other parts or is it a simple bulb change.

Retrofit is not really sensible money. Much easier and quicker to stick in good bulbs, job done then :)
