Proposed changes to F1 points system.

I feel vindicated and expect a full and groveling letter of apology from Gadgetman for implying I am an imbecile:D:P

Bernie is fast loosing the plot. F1 has to be interesting for people to pay the money to go to the races and for TV companies to pay to broadcast the races.

Bernie's plan would mean the usual teams will be on the podium and there would be no incentives for the middle order and the lower teams would probably pack up and go home, leaving about a six team championship.:thumbdwn:

There have been many changes over the years to the points system, none have ever made any real difference to the racing.

Close racing and overtaking is what people want to see and only the teams can do that. Without stiffling development, pehaps limiting the budgets teams can spent each year might help the smaller teams catch up.

Pretty much every time (other than a win going from 8 to 9, and the point for fastest lap going to 6th place) someone has changed the F1 scoring system, someone else has gone through past championships and re-calculated the results on the "new" "system". The results, almost without fail, are mostly a shuffle round of the order multiple champs win their titles in, a couple of single champions lose their one, and a couple of "new champions" are created. In other words, there's no point in bothering!!

Has anyone actually seen the 09 spec cars? Have a look on youtube for the 2009 F1 testing vids...my god they are ugly! The front wing looks like a snowplough and (I think its) the BMW has a rear wing about 18 inches long (okay maybe a bit bigger but it still looks tiny!) I hope the racing is worth it , but Im not holding my breath. As for this ludicrous 'medals' idea , the least said about that the better. If they do much more tinkering then I will be giving F1 a miss :(

I understand what you are saying......

To me, ever since i was a nipper the appeal of F1 also had a lot to do with the way the cars looked! They should look like every young boy/girls wild fantasy racing car.. sleek, futuristic............ Not like something your dad knocked together in the shed out of some old fence panels!

Have you seen Bernies plans for 2010?? long gone are v12's & v10's and in 2010 v8's will follow......

the future is dog power.....

I checked out this video on youtube:

YouTube - F1 2009 Winter Testing - Barcelona, 17-18-19 November

Loved the comparison with the Knight Riders car whilst explaining the kinetic energy recovery system (of course David Hasselhoff is second only to Michael Schumacher in the Germans affections :D)

Agree that the cars won't win any beauty pagents, but then this years cars wouldn't have either!

2008 vs 2009:-

Yes the 2009 wings are out of proportion with each other, but the cars have slicks, and don't have bargeboards. On the whole I think it's a minor win.

I remember when they went to grooved tyres and made the cars narrower, I was horrified. The cars just looked stupid. But time is a great healer and I eventually got used to the weird new cars (although I have never warmed to the stupid winglets) and I suspect that we will all get used to the new look pretty quickly. Slick tyres=Mechanical grip=overtaking=Fun :)(at least I hope so.

oh my those wings better be made of something strong... I think we'll see a lot of wings lost *if* they get closer, I hope they do, really hope they start racing.

TBH watching 5 lads round a go kart track is worth more than f1 on a weekend.

Points should be given for a pole and fastest lap. It would bring out the risk and reward of racing.

Slicks are going to have to help, unless they have used a bakelite inspired compound.

I’m still waiting for the inverted tunnel to be added to a track, although it might not be such a good idea with reduced downforce………..or there again:D

Pit babes aren't so good though

Whats with the overtaking obsession on the bbc article.

I liked the BTCC system but even there you're resorting to "tactics" to get the points and not the win.

The racing in the BTCC is more close quarters though which makes it fun.

F1 does get boring and Ferrari seem get away with bending the rules a bit more. Back when Schumacher drove for Benneton the Ferrari team were not doing so well.

Back when Schumi drove for Benetton, Ferrari did not employ one or two of the three or four best drivers in the sport; just a couple of ok men.

  • 2 weeks later...

Oh no, the senile old twit is still banging on about giving out "medals"

Bernie, take the hint, go sort out your devorce settlement & leave it alone ok.
