is it possible to retrofit dimming mirror?

Featured Replies

I picked up my new octy VRS estate yesterday, stunning car and the CR engine is sooo quiet compared to my 140 PD on the L&K.

I got a very good deal on an already built car but it doesnt have the dimming rear view mirror. Its being helped by sunset glass but still a bit bright so have been flipping the mirror up

My question is has anyone retro fitted a dimming mirror and if so what parts are needed? Ive got the bog standard mirror so no wire conduit is in place to go to the headlining. Im not bothered about the rain sensors either so wouldnt need this, only the mirror part if its possible???

I dont know if it could be done, but you would need the mirror, the sensor, wiring and a new windscreen.

didnt think id need the sensor (and windwscreen) though as the dimmer for the mirror is built into the mirror isnt it?

Yes it is. But Mannyo is still right, you'll need a new fixing for the mirror which holds the rain sensor. You don't need to buy a sensor though.

Also if you want a clean and OEM looking installation, you'll need to change the windscreen. The current mirror fixing is bonded to the screen and is impossible to remove without breaking the screen.

So if you install it to the old screen, your new mirror will be placed much lower than the original one.

The wiring of the mirror is dead easy. You'll only need +12v and ground. And both of these can be taken from the ceiling light wiring :)

If it is bonded, could you not use a Dremel or similar to help it come off ;)

You can try :) And not to destroy the windscreen in the process ;)

If the rain sensor isn't going to be fitted, it MIGHT be possible to install the new mirror fixing around the old one. The old one is a small round badge and the new one a larger rectangular one.

DOH!

thats a real shame, i thought it might be a quick swap of the mirror then wire the mirror into the lighting circuit or something. Can the non-dipping mirror be removed from the mount that attaches to the windscreen to take a look at how its connected? (or has anyone got any etka diagrams)

Not sure about that. I think it might be possible to remove the old mirror mount without breaking it. It should leave the fixed base to the windscreen only.

I wrote about this same matter a few weeks ago in another thread. There's some links on Golf V autodimming rearview mirror and rain sensor retrofit. The guides have good pictures in them.

There are some other options. From eBay you can find a selection of aftermarket autodimming mirrors. They should be fixable to the current mount also. They are meant as a direct replacement.

Did anybody try one of those Gentex auto dimming mirrors available on wepay?

DigitalMirrors.co.uk do a very good Digital Auto Dimming Clip-On Rear View Mirror in different tints-no wiring required as battery powered. I found it works really good.
