Fridge fault finding?

Featured Replies

Can anyone help me with my broken fridge/freezer?

Hotpoint FFM90A fridge/freezer

The freezer is working fine and has been confirmed the temperature is getting down to -21 (digital thermometer).

The fridge is only getting down to around 9'.I have looked on the tinternet and some people suggest defrosting it and then trying it as icing on the fan can occur.

The main problem (i think) is the fan that cools the fridge isn't kicking in apart from a few seconds when the main power is turned on.

Anybody know the wiring for one of these so i can by pass thermostat for fridge so that i can test if that is working ok.

TIA

Sometimes a lot of ice on the back panel can cause a problem, also I have found a lot of dust clogging the cooling panel at the back of the fridge has caused the fridge not cool correctly.

I would clean the back panel and defrost first.

Is it Frost free? Do the fans/compressor sound too quiet or too noisey?

Yes it is FF,compressor seems to kick in and it's not all frosted up as i have taken the panel off inside the freezer.

I think the problem is the fan doesn't kick in to send cold air to the fridge.

When the fridge/freezer is 1st turned on the fan turns for a few seconds then stops.

Being frost free, and most probably electronic controlled ( model no means not a lot to me) it could be the pcb or the sensor/probe. It could also be something to do with the door switch if it's of the magnetic variety and only allows the fan to run when the door is closed. It could also be a failed defrost heater/duct heater as it's frost free (all fridges are but frost free applies to the freezer and what we really mean is forced air flow fridg). As it sounds of this type, the list of possible faults causing your issue are to many and varied to even consider messing with it yourself. In this instance I would call Hotpoint.

I have put it back together and will see if it still does the same fault tomorrow.Called someone today and they said it could be PCB if so £100 bill min.

Like you said Hotpoint could be my best bet as they will charge no more than £150 including parts/labour and will replace it with a new one if it breaks within the next 12 months.

I have opened the flap that goes to the fridge to see if this will allow the fridge to get cool for now.

Cheers

Hotpoint should do 5yrs parts if you registered it ;)
