Tell me about the Octavia vRS

Featured Replies

I'm not a regular Skoda driver. I enjoy the odd wee blast in my wife's Fabia vRS and my daily driver is a MKIV Golf GT TDI. It's remapped to 145 bhp and 253 lbs-ft of torque and sits on Bilstein PSS9 suspension and 16" wheels wearing Conti Sport Contacts.

I have a favourite twisty B road that I like to attack on my way home from work. This afternoon I caught up with an Octavia vRS on this road and we both were held up for a few miles because of a double decker bus and two cars bimbling along at 40 mph on the double white lined bit.

As soon as we got to a straight bit and the end of the double whites, the guy in the Octavia took off again past the two cars and the bus in one hit. I followed and did the same after he'd completed his manouevre. The thing that surprised me was that I was able to reel him in at will on that short straight and could easily have been all over the back of him on the ensuing twisty bits had I not been maintaining my two second rule. Down to the next wee roundabout and following that, he booted it away past another two cars again followed by me. He then slackened off and I passed him at something approaching a true 85 mph.

Now this was in no sense a race. I was only travelling at my usual rate of progress on that road and no doubt he was doing the same. Nevertheless, the Octavia didn't seem to be as quick as I expected it to be and it didn't appear to handle the bendy bits as well as my Golf. Maybe my car's quicker than I think and perhaps it handles better than I give it credit for, now that I'm so used to it.

Observations.....?

Yep.

He's a crap driver

No he certainly wasn't "crap". He made a couple of good overtakes in best "making progress" style and the first was on a very narrow and quite challenging bit of road. He also managed to attack the twisty bits quite vigorously.

I'm perfectly prepared that he wasn't as good as I am, but I'm more interested in the respective performance of our cars........ ;)

Yours is chipped & has trick suspension, his was almost certainly standard. Makes all the difference in the twisty bits.

A race is not a race if not both of the drivers are aware it is a race... Maybe he only intended to overtake a few cars.

This thread reminds me of the tuu@t on the A19 when i was coming back from Brunters..

He was in a TDi Golf too. He certainly knows what the rear-end of an Octavia looks like now ;)

I think I understand what you mean.......confused2.gif I did make the point that it was nowhere near being a race. I don't do racing on the road. Do keep up....... But then perhaps you drive an Octavia vRS. It's not a silver one, is it.....? :D

I had PSS9's on my Golf and they make a MASSIVE difference to handling; which they should at well over

No, it is black, but I don't see why silver ones should have all the fun? Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that he was only trying to overtake vehicles, not trying to lose you.

When i was overtaking the two cars and the bus i was in 5th dont need to change down to overtake if i'd been in 2nd or 3rd you'd not had been smiling:eek: and thought i got to get me one of these:rofl: :D

it wasn't me really.:D:rofl:

Twisty road per chance?

Octy RS has long gearing so it's very good on A roads and motorways....fine on B roads but, and importantly to your question, it needs the suspension sorting PLUS the usual type of B road does not particularly suit the gearing.

IMHO of course and my usual disclaimers apply. ;)
