Standalone internet radio - pipe dream?

Featured Replies

A radio that I can listen to TV stations etc without a computer connection? By standalone, assume no TV, cable etc at all.

Lots of DAB ones on the market and some very fancy (converged?) ones with website programming for streaming  but not sure if they'd work in the middle of nowhere (obviously streaming wouldn't), other than reverting to DAB or AM/FM and aerial pointed at a nearby transmitter.

Me not know.

Ta for any help

Orange do a wifi radio, as do quite a few other makers.

just needs net access and a router ;)

Currys sell a few wireless internet radios, that will work within range of a wireless router without a computer for streaming.

If you have a 3G phone (preferably with HSDPA) that would do it, my N95 does.

Logitech Squeezebox Boom will do this. Just key in your ISP details and tune into Logitech Radio. Mine works fine in hotel rooms with The Cloud or BT Openzone.

Thank you :) Having dragged myself willingly into the 20th Century (telegram from Queenie long ago), I do sometimes feel like that guy who tried to demonstrate a new fangled Hoover before realising that some houses still only had gas  (Harry Enfield I think).

Logic being that it always helps if you know where you're supposed to be starting from re things taken as read.

I've just found the Freecom MusicPal for £67 which seems to do the same job as the Squeezebox Boom, but for 1/3rd the price. It's not stereo though, although having two speakers less than 18" apart on the Squeezebox doesn't do much for the generation of a good three dimensional soundstage:rolleyes:
