last bit of advice for fitting mfd please!

Featured Replies

Promise this will be my last thread on the matter!

My setup is basically installing the original mfd in my mk1 vrs, retaining the use of the original cd changer.

At a later date, I might fit an aux lead for a video source to the round 10 pin connector on the rear of the mfd.

So my question is, will the switch that comes with the plug-and-play affect my setup at all requiring me to mount it somewhere or can I just hide it away behind the dash along with the rest of the cabling.

Obviously, if I do fit the aux source at a later date, I can fish out the switch and mount it somewhere, I just wanted to check it doesn't effect the cd changer as the switch doesn't seem to have an obvious on/off position.

Many thanks, job nearly done!

When Ross (Lummox) fitted mine he drilled a small hole in the glovebox and mounted the plug'n'play switch there. It's out of the way, but easy to get to if required.

The switch just turns off the speed sensor so you can watch video while driving (very naughty).

Ok, I lied, I have another quick question!

Unit is now wired up and decoded and working great but I cannot get it to lock into place in the dash.

The problem is the cabling behind and the fact that at the rear of the dash opening is a cross shaped back plate which restricts the room. This is strange as I haven't seen anything similar in any of the photo guides to fitting.

I'm tempted to just take a hack-saw to it to free up the space but wondered if anyone else had encountered a similar problem and found a lee drastic work-around?

The car is a vrs and before anyone asks, yes I did remove the glovebox but still couldn't free up enough room for the cabling!

Trial and error I think, there is a lot of cabling but I think it should fit.

Cheers for the reply Stu.

Problem is I don't think it's the cabling as, at the expense of every last scrap of flesh that used to adorn my knuckles, I've managed to route it so it definately isn't fouling.

The unit is very nearly in, and looks flush with the facia at the top, but at the bottom at both corners it's protruding by a couple of mm. More importantlay from a security point of view, I was expecting an audible 'click' when it locked into place and it hasn't, and if I reach around the rear, I can push it back out without using the keys.

I do wonder if it is this 'cross' shaped back of the housing as the rear of the mfd is definately pushed up against it but there's another inch of space beyond it.

The picture below (borrowed from another forum) shows the opening and unlike in my car there is nothing at the rear of it with much more room for the cabling.

EDIT:

just noticed on your guide though that your car had the same obstruction as can be seen in the piccie below so now I'm really stuck for an answer!

this is going to sound really bloody stupid, but it worked for me in the Roomster when fitting a double DIN Witson unit.

It was fouling on something at the back, I had done everything regarding getting cables out of the way, so to discover were it was fouling I covered the back of the unit with Duck Tape (bear with me) and then pushed it in good and hard (oooeeer) and then pulled the unit out. It had clearly marked the duck tape were contact had been made and I found it to be a small "lip" at the back of the radio recess. Only a couple of mm, so a very slight trim and it was in.

Sounds like a daft idea, but it can help you identify where it's "fouling" if it's at the back of the unit.

Again, I didn't fit my own - it was done by Ross at U18, but he struggled to get everything back in on mine too - I have 2 changer cables (one for the changer, one for the Phatbox), a phone cable, a cable to hook up the TMC unit, the satellite antenna cable and the normal audio connectors and I'm pretty sure he hacksawed out a chunk of the bar at the back to get it all in.

Oddly enough, he was very particular about not forcing it. He didn't stop adjusting until it slid back in and clicked into place with no force at all.

This picture isn't very clear at all, but I think you can just see the edge of where he cut the rear bracket away.
