Anyone in the know RE x box?

Featured Replies

Evening all,

Can anybody tell me the differences between the xbox arcade and premium? Is it just the hdd, and if so, can the arcade be upgraded?

Or is there more to it?

Thanks

There you go :) Probably not worth upgrading the drives as they cost a fortune, although you can hack them yourself. It might also be worth waiting a little while if you can because the new Jasper chipsets have been found in the wild (informally) and draw less power, so create less heat, than the current chipset. There are loads of fan forums tracking this religiously..

The backwards compatibility with the original Xbox is a weird one, as this is done in software. I don;t know if they hacked the Arcade version so they couldn't handle it, or if it's just a matter of not having the storage space to run the emulator by default.

Arcade doesnt have wifi does it?

None of them do out-of-the-box without the expensive adapter, but I think they all have the bridge built in to connect it to - that may not have been the case early on. You're still looking at an extra £60 to get wifi running. I just conenct mine through this PC that's already wireless using ICS :)

I'd check just to be sure, but given the deals on premium consoles and all the extra kit you get with them, I think it's worth the extra over the Arcade regardless.

Yes... problem is the new XBL experience requires storage (either Hdd or memory card) to work..

On the other hand.. the new "jasper" revision Xbox's are starting to ship now, which are built on a 65nm process so use less power and run cooler+quieter

I through the arcade was a different beast inside, and not upgradeable to premium x360 spec?

The Jasper versions have 256mb of flash onboard rather than the previous 16mb for that reason, although in the US there's an upgrade programme allowing Arcade owners to buy recon hard drives for a fraction of the original price. You do get a memory card with the Arcade but it's small and pretty hopeless for saving from more than a couple games - you also can't store game patches to it as far as I know, and you won't have a hope of collecting any DLC unless you get a drive.

I think they're identical now, although that was the case in teh early days as far as I can remember. Microsoft's future plans involve lots of DLC so there's no financial sense in marketing a different set of hardware with less potential for future earnings. I'd imagine they're all now the same (except for the different coloured CD tray) and the difference is in the bundled accessories.
