VAG Dual Speaker Connection Gizmos

Featured Replies

Hi All

This may have been asked before...

The rather neat in/out connectors used in the standard ice speakers/leads are pretty use friendly. Signal in to woofer on one wire and out to tweeter by its side all in one little black plastic housing.

Is it standard practice to remove the female "housing" bit from the original speakers in order to somehow attach it to the upgrade speakers or can one buy these VAG gizmos somewhere. I would rather not cut the male connectors off the OEM wiring as eventually I will put the OEM speakers back in the car when I get rid of it.

Thanks

Matty

With enough persuasion (I found a pointy screw worked well) you should be able to get the new speaker wire to sit between the contacts in the "housing bit"...you can then secure this with some tape or something.

It's a bit of a botch, but it does the job and if you're looking for reversability then it's about as easy as it gets... :)

Ah I think I understand.

Keep the old speakers intact with their little black boxes - good.

Use a short length of the wire provided with the new speakers with the spade ends on and then poke the bare ends into the conectors on the in-situ speaker wire black clip ends.

Indeed very simple and very reversible.

Thanks

If you're going with co-axial speakers and don't want to use the tweeter (it is pretty poor), then you don't need to do anything with one of the housings, which makes things more straightforward! :)

Kenwood custom fit speakers come with an adaptor to plug straight onto the factory fit wiring , so they do exist.

Whether you can buy them separately is another matter thought.

I did exactly this with the added refinement of simulated spade ends on the ends that went into the old connectors - achieved by folding the wire over and soldering into a flat shape. Of course you could crimp some new flat spades on those ends too - but they need to be very small and narrow.
