New brakes for vRS

Hello all,

I know there are lots of threads about the Fabia vRS brakes, but i thought instead of hi-jacking one, i would start my own because i might go on a bit lol. :)

Warning lots of questions coming up

My car has done 30k miles and is due its 3rd service. I've just had my car in for a repair a few days a go at the bodyshop, and i was given a new 08 courtesy car which i have been driving about in. I covered about 400 miles (painfully slow :rofl:) and as soon as i collected my vRS i noticed that the brakes are abosultely crap/shocking/dangerous compared to what i had got used to. :thumbdwn:

Obviously the car i was driving only had like 2k miles on it and was pretty much brand new, where as mines has done 30k miles and the brakes have worn. I've known for a few weeks now that the brakes have been beginning to feel worn/weaker but never realised how weak lol.

I know that when i take my car in to the stealer for the service they will check the brakes and will no doubt say i need new discs and pads all round

Is it likely that its just my pads that have worn or do the discs wear at the same rate?

Could i get away with just replacing the pads only? If so how long would the pads tend to last on worn discs?

Or would i need to replace both the discs and pads at the same time?

Any guide prices on what the stealers charge these days for having front and rear discs and pads fitted?

I was thinking that if i am going to replace the discs and pads all round then i might as well upgrade to 312mm discs, because lots of folk on here have said they are a huge improvement.

How much do they cost? Where is the best place to buy all the parts?

Where's the best place to get them fitted from?

What parts do i exactly needed to upgrade to 312s?

Sorry for all the questions lol

Just that i need new brakes and thought id get some adivce before letting the stealer replace them for me.

Cheers

right!! becasue the cars been standing a while, the brakes being unused might not help matters, so they may improve a little with use.

you really need someone to have a look at the condition of the discs and pads. sometimes you can get away with just putting a set of pads in (approx £30) plus the fitting. it all depends on how well the disc has worn.

when it is in for the service get them to change the brake fluid also. this generally helps the 'feel' of the pedal.

maybe look for a skoda specialist around your area. best having a word in the regional areas for peoples opinions.

312mm brakes will improve the whole performance of the brakes and reading the posts generally cost about £200 quid for parts +the fitting.

use the search engine for a bit more detail on this becasue there are loads of posts

As disc rotor wear they get thinner = earlier brake fade. Wear rate depends on type of driving, and type of pads fitted. Standard brakes on a standard car should be more than adequate if driving style is sensible. I've seen discs shot after only 15,000 miles when driven by muppets, and discs with plenty life left at 50,000 miles when driven by a good driver. :D

Cheers for the replies.

I will get someone to get a proper look at them and give me some measurements on how much they've worn. If i can get away with just replacing the pads for another few thousand miles then i will do that and start putting money aside for the 312mm upgrade.

Oh for the folk who have upgraded to 312s, do you have to tell your insurance compnay that the brakes have been upgraded?

Does it affect the price of the policy by much?
