Variable

Featured Replies

Are all new octavias [presant model] variable servicing.or do you have to ask for it to be so.

They have changed back and forth but all have variable oil in so best to ask when you buy the car, tell them what you want and go from there.

My garage was really nice. As I have the 3 year servicing deal, they set mine back to fixed, so I get my money's worth!!

I've read all the blurb on technology improvements in engineering and lubricants but going 15k or 20K on the same oil just doesn't seem right to me.

My 58 plate octavia will be on fixed interval with me doing an oil and filter change inbetween (just changed it today now its run in - £40 for parts from Seat dealer and 1/2 an hour to do most of which was fiddling about with the undertray!)

I'm going to do this too, change the oil etc after about 10 months but keep on Variable. With the right grade and make of oil etc this won't muck up the sensor or anything like that? As my car shows 18 months to next trip to dealer now. After some other posts hear i was going to use a Pela Pump to suck the oil out - would that be ok?

James.

James,

I'm not an expert on the subject but I would have thought doing an interim oil change on variable would upset the sensors that tell you it needs a service.

Also, I'm not keen on using a pump to suck out the oil as there is no guarantee you get it all out. It was fairly easy to remove the undertray though some of the bolts (3) were a bit tight as they were locktite'd in.

Quite a few people on hear seem to use them and a friend who has a motor boat swears by them! See: Pela Oil Extractor, Pela Liqiud Extractor I use to do oil changes DIYed for years but would happy never having to crawl under a car again of the pump works!

That's was my big concern upsetting the sensor with any diy oil change. Will it or not does anyone know? Say the computer says 10 months to next service and I whip old oil out, will it rest it self and move to another 18 months or stick at 10 months? I plan to keep the car and think 18 months is too long for oil change and don't want to pay dealer £100+ for a job that takes 30m and can be DIYed for £45!

James.

Changing the oil will upset the variable service sensor yes, it measures oil quality, so if half way through it sees new oil then it will probably take you to the maximum.

Also there is a damn good chance it will invalidate your warranty should something happen and they can prove you have done it.

Dam! Maximum is 2 years right? The car now shows 498 days (1.36 years) to service and I had the car new September this year. So on this basis of my driving it will be serviced if left on variable at about 1.5 years old right. Still don't fell happy about leaving the oil in that long, past cars (honda's) ever 6 months but I guess the car is monitoring things and oil is good...

In recent review of a VW, 'Honest John' made the commit about common sense to change oil ever year for all cars that you own and love.... and not the variable option.

James.

Maximum is 2 years or 18600 miles.

Lummox,

I'm not sure changing the oil per say will invalidate your warranty - it tells you how to do it in the owners manual! I always use original parts albeit from Seat as they are 2 mins from work. Under EU law dealers are not allowed to restrict who services the vehicle only that genuine parts are used. It does add an extra element to the debate should things go wrong!! Warranty is a different matter entirely.

That said I'm sure they wouldn't be happy interfering with the variable set up.

Ian

I really dont see any benefit in changing oil between recommended service schedules.

Never heard of a car breaking that was on long life. % years ag perhaps, but many marques have done this for some time. Even my Mk1 was on variable!
