The turbo will have no worries. :)

Turbo will only be stressed if on full boost and when in neutral the turbo is boosting hardly at all - At most mine might touch 0.2 bar when floored to the limiter in neutral. :) As long as the engine is good, cambelt strong, and it's running well, it should be fine. Turbo should be fine. :thumbup:

If you're really worried about it, remove the vacuum hose off the turbo actuator thereby thumping the car into limp mode. Then the turbo will be totally "dead" for the smoke test, and the engine not at full power. :) Re-attach vacuum hose afterwards.

Yea mate can meet up with you, bring the laptop and VAG-COM with you and we'll see how many millibars the turbo actually produces then hahahaha! Apparently measuring block 10 can help you find out if the actuator for the vane system is actually working.

Got a feeling i may have part of the turbo lodged in the catalytic, so hes going to drop that off in the morning and have a look to see if anything drops out.

Hopefully all should be well again after this.Didn,t do too bad 125K for the turbo.

I can't understand all the talk of failed turbos on here, after being part of the VAG scene for 4/5 years. I must have just been lucky!

I agree.If somethings going to fail after a time then it will.Doesn,t matter what it is but Turbos are always getting a rough deal.

The continous heating and cooling of metals is never going to be good for it. All metals tend to suffer fatigue eventually. Mine looks like its snapped towards the edge of the exhaust turbine casing.

I can only imagine that the constant heat cycling and the rotational stresses occured by the compressor wheel can only explain what has happened to mine.

My profession is of inspecting materials for defects, quite alot of maintenance work involves heating and force being exerted to the structure attributing to the defects in question.

I once did a mould for the radiator grills of the Mercedes, which was leaving crack marks in the actual plastic grills. Turned out once i applied a electromagnet and some magnetic ink, that were some cracks appearing that wasn't being left in the mould.

Exactly the same thing happened to my 1.9 mk5 golf at 60K miles, it was in warranty until 60,999 miles so just in time.

I've now got the car back, and its far more refined to drive now.

The old turbo was chattering at low revs, so i can only suspect this has been happening way before i bought the car. And the surging has created stress within the shaft and finally given up.

The new one is hardly audioable and it just about rips your head off with a quick spirt of throttle in 2nd, i now have no chatter and it pulls like a train.

Big Thumbs up to A.T Auto's in Rotherham for there level of service!
