Urgent Advice Needed! Think My Turbo's just let go!

Featured Replies

Only 10mins after having a conversation with a friend tonight about how many miles the turbo's done (just short of 125k!) or at least i believe anyway.

Pulling through the rev range then all of a sudden it was like hitting a brick wall the car lost power.

Managed to get it off at the next junction of the M1 and took a look around, ended up pulling the boost hose off as it was sucking flat and there was no thick smoke pouring from the exhaust as id have expected and still isnt.

The turbo doesnt sound like its spooling and it just feels like it keeps wanting to keep on rolling, on the over run.

Came to a hill so started building some speed for the long hill, managed to keep my speed but had to keep the foot to the floor. At which point the EML light has come on.

Is there any possible pipes that could have come off that controls the VNT system, which has now closed and not allowing the turbine wheel to catch any gasses?

Or does it sound like its seized?

I just cant get to grips that the engine isn't pouring smoke out, as ive heard people mention when a boost hose pops off they plume smoke!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as its coming up to christmas and im not going to have a car. That i feel i can drive without causing more damage.

I've still got the omega, but its declared SORN and not sure with having any NCB i could insure it for a couple of weeks, just to get me around.

Many Thanks In Advance!

You need to look up the Brisky map of people with vagcom and scan it.

When I disconnected the MAP sensor I had the same symptoms - no smoke but turbo not working. There was also a new turbo noise at low revs.

If worse comes to worse I may be able to source a cheap 1.9TDi turbo.

If the omega was still taxed, then you could have insured it temporarily with dayinsure.com. However you cannot get a tax through that insurance, so it kind of rules it out.

I taxed my Leon with one of those day insurance places. The cover note arrived at home, car arrived at work, untaxed, so I went online, got a cover note, went to the post office, came out with a tax disc.

Could you temporarily add the Omega to your policy while the Octy gets sorted?

Regarding the Octy, I agree with Basil. Get it scanned, check all the hoses first.

I think it will have the fault code because ive actually took the boost pipe out before/after a sensor. As it was sucking flat and causing me to struggle even more.

As for the hoses, i dont think it is them. As they were sucking flat, indicating to me there was no boost. You cant physically hear the turbo spinning.

Thanks to Shark_90 for meeting me to see if we could get any where with the fault codes, took this log then cleared and took it for a rather boostless drive.

The EML Light did come on about 5miles after id taken the boost pipe off the intercooler pipe though. Which was put back on for testing of the car.

But after clearing the faults and going out with Ben to do some live reads of the boost pressures as above the car was asking for 2000+ millibar of boost but was sat at the same reading all the time. Whilst driving there is no turbo spoolin noises what so ever, and im not sure if the EGR governs the boost pressures.

Ben then did another fault scan and nothing was logged after the drive.

We may now think it maybe the EGR Valve that is stuck in one position, anyone in the know that can shed some light on the above faults (apart from the radio) then i'd be greatful!

Think i may know what the Intermittent faults are with the relay (clifford hard wired in as the can bus adaptors wouldnt play ball.)

Many thanks to Ben, very helpful and friendly guy!

Glad to be of service

Measuring the boost the car was requesting boost but the turbo was producing next to nothing, there was a change though of a few millibars. I think it was Block 011 I was logging, not sure.

Any ideas anyone?

Faulty N75?

  • Author

N75? Not sure, the turbo doesn't spool at all. Or at least it doesn't appear to (no spooling noise).

Is the N75 a recirc dumpvalve? If so my petrol turbo split that but it still boosted ok.

But then again this is a diesel, why does VW have to put the exhaust manifold on the rear?!

Should be on the front, would be really easy to get to the turbo then.

Can anyone else shed any more light on the situation? Could the Variable vane system be stuck?

Will get a video soon, when you come onto over run you get backlash through the gearbox which clunks but the car will keep rolling regardless if you gear down, while on a decent.

The N75 is the actuator for the VNT mecahnism. AIUI, the vanes will default to 'no boost' if the control is lost- like if the wastegate is stuck open on a non-VNT turbo. It's a valve that controls vacuum to the actuator on the turbo. There's no dump valve with a diesel, as there's no throttle to block the inlet, so it's not needed.

  • Author

Hi thanks for the reply, i think i may have tracked the N75 down....got a pic that i will upload shortly.

Just need someone to clarify it, it does look though as if it comes out of the fuel pump on the end of the camshaft into a body, where a vacuum line comes off of the vacuum box and the other head dissapears right upto and under the bulk head.

I had my arm down the back of the block, tried forcing the actuator rod down. But i didnt have the strength to shove it from where i was looking. Made sure the pipe was on the actuator and had a feel around on the pipe. But wasn't sure where it ran to, it seamt to tail off to the left and forward under the turbo/block.

Ive tried cleaning the MAF out, to no avail....took it a drive with a passenger in and the EML light has re-appeared after it gave a slight kick (presuming it went to limp mode) Although it already feels like that from starting it up!

New Vacuum block on and although the vacuum is much better to the EGR, ive still got the problem. Im wondering now if the vanes have got wedged open. I tried getting a hammer in to give it some gentle persuation earlier on the actuator rod! Didnt suceed in reaching it because of the ruddy EGR Pipe in the way.

Anyone give me any advise, i was expecting VRS Stu to have a comment regarding this.

Im tearing my hair out, as ive no car for over the christmas period.

Game over for the turbo, was taken to a specialist (AT Autos) near parkgate...went on the diagnostic machine, then off with the turbo pipe (exhaust side).

No vanes left on the exhaust side, was told they appeared to be melted away.

Thought there was something wrong about 3 months since when the turbo would start whirring away after 2mins until you blipped the throttle. Looks like its been on its way for a while.

Gets fixed next monday thankfully.

Quick update:

The car still isn't fixed, but this appears to be down to the time of the year and the supplier of the turbo not making the garage aware. That they didnt send one out yesterday, because they dont have any on the shelf.

So heres the following pics.

Blimey... thats not right at all

Nope it dont lol, having to laugh about it.

Because if i dont, i think i'll cry...getting expensive now.....and think i may have whats left of the compressor wheel/shaft lodged in the front of the catalytic convertor.

Hopefully it will still pass emmisions and run right, as the car was pretty much still driveable.

Shame i dont work for the previous company anymore, they had a endescope that i could have shoved down the front section of the cat.

that's possibly the most fooked turbo I've seen :D especially on the intake side.

Hope no damage has been done elsewhere. :)

  • Author

Well, ive had any other problems apart from a lack of boost.

Inlet tracks have only got oil residue in them, and i never noticed anything when i took the EGR off to see if it was sticking.

Engine ticks over nice and smooth albeit a distinct smell of diesel fumes hahaha!

All being well if the turbo arrives early in the morning the guy down at AT Auto's is going to hang back and get it all back together with fresh oil. My only concern then is the catalytic, as the MOT runs out next week.

My only concern then is the catalytic, as the MOT runs out next week.

You could gut the cat right out and it will still pass the MOT. It's only a smoke test you know? ;)

regards

Jason

decatted for over 4 years :D

  • Author

Approx what rev range do they hold it in for the smoke test? Thats my next concern once the brand spanker is put on.

Dont want them holding it in the upper rev range for too long whilst the new turbo is still settling in.

Use to pour smoke out whilst getting anywhere near 3400rpm, hope the new turbo sorts some things out.

For the smoke test they bounce it off the limiter for a second or so - seriously.

If you're worried about smoke just securely attach a block of wood under the throttle pedal to limit how fast / high it revs up. Nothing they can do about it, and can't fail the MOT on it either.

For the record, if mine can pass a smoke test (without a block of wood needed :D) almost any derv car in good condition should.

  • Author

LOL, its the turbo im worried about....not the smoke lol.

Haven't just put a new turbo on just to bounce the thing off the limiter ahahahaha!

Im really hoping the parts arrive early morning and i can get the car back, cant complain about the service im getting from the actual Skoda Specialist. Polite mannered and doesn't like to see people stuck, i believe he was still at his unit when he phoned to give me an update last night (6:45pm).
