Felicia problem

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I bought my 1,3 GLXi Felicia about 2 months ago for 850 euro. It was manufactured in 1995.

So before i buy it i did drove it and all things were working fine, only a bit slow 1rst gear acceleration (while i was stoped). So the seller told me that i might have to change the clutch soon and i said it was ok. After one and a half month i did changed the clutch kit and then i notised the following:

1)There is no way the car will ever climb the slightest hill, last 2 days i cant take it out of the garage (garage is on the basement and the only solutiuon i found is by going backwards) ,also the acceleration on slightly ascending roads is happening on full throttle 4k-5k rpm and still strugling.Plus overall acceleration (when stoped) is pretty bad.:(

2)The gears changed. 2nd gear is now the 3rd one !! (is this possible??)

Normally going at 60kph(2nd gear) and changing to 3rd gear then engines goes VOOOM and rpm goes to 4000 from 2300 or so and cant gain more speed. Then i tried on going 1rst gear then 3rd and then 2nd gear and car is working perfectly.

Furthermore Skoda repair team is repeatedly telling me that i have to wait for the clutch to bind with the car or something like that (already did 167km).

Could any of you guys provide me with some of his wisdom?

I really fell in love with the car and i dont want to cry my money:(

Thanks all in advance.

Did you fit the new clutch or did a garage do it for you?

Hi bobob,

Skoda's service team did all the service and fiting,

Anyways i went again this morning to mechanics and the told me that 3rd engine cylinder has a problem.

After that i burst in flames!! 2 weeks ago told me it was the clutch and now the engine?? wth is that?

They were supposed to drove it and see if it was ok.

the cluck is working great, is normal to feel the clutch not gripping when the engine's torque has gone down the drain.

the motors valve are not sealing correctly and the previous owner changed spark timing slightly thats why 1st gear doesn't accelerate well from stop and i bet you could change gears before 2000 rpm without feeling like the car is slow or mushy.

please do me a favor; set spark timing with strobe gun, and set the valve clearance to stock, check spark (if you don't know how to do it let me know) and please take a picture of two of your spark plugs and submit it i (before doing the changes i asked of you) i'll appreciated it.

i want the spark plugs pictures to confirm jetting and heat range

and since your in the mechanic, do service, all filters change, spark plug change, oil change and clean the intake manifold and apply a little DW-40 to make sure all moving parts are not sticking, you going to love the way it drives afterwards, i did:thumbup:

and hold the guy that changed the cluck accountable for the gear thing and ask him to fix it

explained myself as to why

Hi bobob,

how to test spefici cylinder problems;

tools needed; Strobe gun + vacuum Gauge, spark plug wrench

connect the vacuum gauge to the engine and let it warm up fully (to 90ish degrees), then measure vacuum, it should give you a steady firm reading of 19 to 22 inches of mercury and drop sharply every other rev (if this is not happening, its not a cylinder problem)

now, connect strobe gun to spark plug wire #1 (for cylinder 1) #4 (for cylinder 2) #2 (for cylinder 4) and #3 (for cylinder 3) while projecting it to the vacuum gauge, when the light hit the vacuum gauge at the lowest vacuum thats the cylinder that has a problem

Vacuum reading diagnostics for cylinder problems;

drop of 1 / 2 inch of mercury = improper exhaust valve clearance

drop of 4 inch of mercury = burnt valve

drop of 4 or more inch of mercury or more = piston ring damage / compression problem

sharp drop to almost 0 = missfire

i'm pretty sure is not a big problem, cause you would have felt it when you purchased the vehicle, when you set the valve clearance to what i told you have them spray a generous ammount of DW-40 on the valve stems and springs and set them to 0.20mm intake 0.25mm exhaust (just tried that thanks to a different thread) this is the order

H. W. W. H. H. W. W. H. (h = exhaust, w = Intake)

change the HT leads and spark plugs and i bet that cylinder is going to come to life (as well as your car)

Evening Cepheuz,

Wow pretty amazing stuff you are saying there, and i am a bit confuzed but i typed them down and gona check if the mechanic did all the thinks you said. Responce is coming tomorrow morning

Thanks a lot mate! :)

Today mechanics told me that the will have to disassemble the engine to find out what is not working on the cylinder, and told me that the sure is that it has a burned flange(or gasket)

Told them to use the stuff you mention earlier Cepheuz but the were stunned for some reason , and said they are going to check them.

google vacuum diagnostic cylinder and you'll find a lot of info, including this page wich i found very cool

Performance Probe

and get me a pic of the fire end of the spark plug on that cylinder and another of any other plug in the engine, there are three flanges, one for compression, one for oil, and one for cleaning in the piston to test the compression just remove spark plug spray DW-40 in good amount and plug in a compression tester, if it goes up, its the flange, if it stays the same its the valves (accounting that the cylinder has a low value to begin with)

So mechanic called me today to go and see what happened, he had the engine dismantled in the trunk and told me that the engine cover needs replace.

The first thing i notised was that almast all the engine's hollows were quite rusty and he told me because of the burning preassure flange, water went inside the engine and destroyed it. Also the flange was burned up to 2,5 milimiters(or something like that) and that is why 3rd cylinder was dead and pretty soon all of them.

After an hour he showed me a well preserved second hand engine cover and i realized the difference.

Eventually the car was not only losing 3rd's cylinder power but way more.

On upcoming Thuesday it will be ready to go.

Thanks for all the support guys and especially Cepheuz and Merry Christmas.

P.S i forgot to take fotos :cyclops:

Today the car was fixed :D

New engine cover, spark plugs, filter, oil and runs like heaven. It performs even better when i bought it. Engines sounds smouth, its runing much more easier, and accelaration is really really good.

Thanks for all replies and especially Cepheuz!

Keep up the good work and have a prosperous happy new year!!
