Help: I can't indicate left

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone

Looking for an easy solution here, or at least an indication towards what the problem could be.

I had cruise control retrofitted last week - and consequently had a new indicator switch fitted. Not sure if this is related - probably not, as the indicator switch functions perfectly when used for parking lights (same switch I guess).

When i try to indicate left, nothing happens. No blinking light, no external lights etc.

I can indicate right fine. Also, if I turn the ignition off, I can successfully illuminate the left hand side parking lights (so I don't think this problem is switch related) by pushing the stalk down, as if I were indicating left.

Turning on my hazard lights illuminates all six indicator lights as expected.

Anyone got any ideas what's gone wrong here? Convenience unit? Relay? Fuse?

It's probably also worth mentioning I've recently had problems with:

- Driver side and passenger side window switches switching around

- Inability to wind passenger side window back up.

The last two problems have always been fixed by turning ignition off and on again. Not at all sure if they are related in any way!

Please help!

I did drop Unit 18's mobile number a text but it's a touch unfair to pester him on boxing day. Additionally he is 100 odd miles away and I really don't fancy having to make the journey a second time, especially if someone on here can help solve the problem :)

You didn't pester me, that number is Ali's.

Other than actually changing the switch the cruise control doesnt have anything to do with the indicator. Providing everything is clipped in the back properly connector wise it should be fine. As you have said the parking light works on that side then the switch is working. Have you checked fuses?

Do not think it is the fuse, as the fuse would knock out both indicators as I had the pleasure of removing the fuse a couple of weeks ago to stop the flashing of the lights when the alarm went haywire.

Its was a shot in the dark at best tbh.

If it does turn out to be the switch I can refund you the cost of that if its returned to me.

Hi guys

Thanks for the replies.

Here are some more symptoms for you.

On the way home, the left indicator worked intermittently. When it did work, it worked perfectly and self cancelled as usual; ie no problems whatsoever. However it would then not work again for a random number of attempts, and then would work again at a random junction (usually where it was most needed, actually!)

Ross; don't worry about the cost of the switch, I understand these things happen and it wouldn't be your fault if it was a defective part anyway! Again, I've only really asked you because of all the people on this forum you're bound to have more of an idea than most :).

I'm going to try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. Worth a shot at least! (will do this in the morning...)

EDIT:

I just did a search on the whole of Briskoda and hand-picked several threads from 20 pages of search results (so I am trying here!!). I read a lot about the hazard light switch on Mk1 Octavias. Does the Fabia have something similar?

Do the indicator functions go through the convenience unit, or is it independent? I ask because I've been having those minor electric windows problems and it would make sense (and probably be best, though expensive) if all of the problems were related and down to that computer/circuit board thing.

Does anyone know if a vag com diagnostic scan would be likely to show anything wrong?

If you have VAG-COM handy it may just be worth a look

Has it been playing up sine I fitted the cruise or is it something recent?

All lighting functions run through the boardnetz controller, no relays like the MK1 Octavia.

It was fine all the way home after you fitted the cruise, Ross :)

It just randomly started playing up after a 30 minute journey yesterday and hasn't been the same since.

Problem solved!

One of the connections in the picture I've attached wasn't quite pushed in properly.

5 minute job to disassemble the trim around the steering wheel and plug it in properly :) - happy man here!

Excellent stuff, a nice easy fix and some learning into the bargain - What more can you ask for!!!

As I said via MSN I think that was a good place to start looking.

Glad its sorted and sorry it caused you hassle.

Thanks Stu for the help also.
