Laptop/GPS based SatNav

Featured Replies

After this weekend I just know that I'll be driving the vRS a lot more than I used to do, so I wondered if I could find some more information about getting some SatNav program running on my laptop with a GPS dongle for accurate positioning. Does anyone have any recommendations, experience, urls? One must is that it needs to be able to announce turns as I dont want to stare at the screen too long when flying over country roads ;)

I think most GPS devices have a data output so you can use it to interact with

mapping software.

I have a RoadAngel, which is a fantastic GPS-based "blackspot" alerter, which can

be used with InfoMap on a laptop to do that kind of thing. So that would be about

400 quid for the RoadAngel, then I think the software is about 50 quid.

Haven't done this myself as I like the thrill of getting lost and doing lots of 3 point

turns... :D

I've just got TomTom Navigator 2 for my XDA. Can't really complain for 250 quid.

It will get you where you want to go.

Excellent quality GPS coverage with their new super antenna thing. Also has really good quality rotating maps with 3d view

Check out the web site TomTom

I've tried laptop based satnav and usually end up almost crashing trying to either check the screen or stop the laptop from flying off the passenger seat! (That or the constant moaning of the other half having a hot laptop sat on her lap for several hours  )
