Alloy wheel deterioration

Featured Replies

I took the wheels off my sisters Leon over Christmas to clean the insides and found a lot of corrosion and bubbling on the insides, where the spokes join the rim. Is this something to be worried about? Are the wheels likely to break? I don't think the insides have been cleaned before in the whole lifetime of the car so the corrosion has had at least 6 years building up :thumbdwn:

Id say the'll be fine this is a typical steel hub / alloy wheel reaction, personally (others may argue) but I would get an old paint brush and apply a very thin and light coat of copperslip to both surfaces to slow futher corrosion and to ensure in a year or two you can actually GET the wheels off again, but as far as the wheels cracking or braking..not likey to happen it's just surface reaction.

I put some copaslip on the surfaces and the threads of the bolts as they were a b**ger to get off, I don't think the back wheels had been taken off in years - had to get it on stands and knock the wheels off in the end!

Yep I had to do this with my VRS as the rear tires wear so little and were starting to show signs of perishing, I had them swapped to the front, lets just say we had to get all medieval on those wheels to shift em!!

The easy way to do it is to very slightly loosen the wheelbolts with the car's weight on the wheels, and slowly drive forward a foot or so. If that still doesn't shift it, rock the wheel sideways slightly. Then jack the car up. If you try to knock the wheels off while it's jacked, there's a risk it will slip.
