Octy 1 Symphony head Dead - says 'phone' all the time!

Featured Replies

Was working fine, then one day I noticed it said 'phone' on the display with the keys out of the ignition.

Now it just says 'phone' when you turn it on, regardless if ign is on. Dead otherwise but scans fine on VCDS and says 'diag' during scan.

All other vehicle functions fine apart from 'no comms to radio' which has always been a code.

Removing from the ISO and re-connecting does not fix.

If it was a fuse wouldn't I have noticed something not working? Must look it up tonight.

I did see another thread on this but from a long time ago and unresolved..... It would have happened the day before my 600 mile xmas run wouldn't it :(

Anyone?

Greg.

The telephone mute works by grounding a the mute pin to earth - is it possible that you have a short somewhere? Disconnecting/chopping the mute wire out of the ISO plug should solve your problem providing you don't need/use the mute function.

Interesting - do you happen to know if it will say 'phone' when muted and if it wil say that even when the ignition is switched off such as in my case?

I don't need the mute, there is no phone or provision that I know of to fit one, the radio just needs to work.

Yes it will say phone whenever there is a call (or it thinks there is) whether the ignition is on or off, at least I think that's what mine did before I replaced it. Also I think the phone mute is pin 2 on the black multipin plug.

I have a spare symphony head unit if you want to try swapping it but it will need the code though.

You don't seem to be having much sucess with electrics at the moment do you.

Yes as said it will mute as soon as that wire is grounded regardless of ignition power cycle. It would be simple to just chop the wire out (and insulate it of course) but if you have more time at a later date I would personally want to know what has caused the short.

It's SO frustrating. I don't mind dealing with a problem I have caused or been involved with, but when you haven't touched the radio, or the instruments, or the speed sensor nor any wiring.... I did work on the suspension, gearbox, cambelt etc all those are fine.... Why it picked now to pack up, I don't know. Just pot luck I guess.

Anyhow GOOD news for a change, I cut the wire from pin 2 and the radio is ALIVE and well!

I also have an idea of the issue, the previous owner had a car hands free, there is a small aerial on the boot side window and some gubbins and wires all over the top of the glove box. No holder/anything visible in the interior of the car though. So I'm guessing something they wired in shorted out/connected the 'mute' pin. I won't chase it further as there is no further issue, however should a new kit be needed I think it would be pretty easily resolved by ripping out the old kit & conections, so not an issue at all. Blame apportioned to the fitter of the previous hands free kit I guess.

Shame my skoda CFD's are down, I'm curious where the mute wire ends up, just in case it feeds into anything else in the car (though I can't think what, everything else seems to work fine).

Thanks very much for the offer of a borrow of the head unit though! If it really does go *bang* may need it...

Big *thanks* for the suggestion which was indeed the solution!

Also funny that this has been an all-Nottinghamshire thread.

Though someone is bound to come along punch and judy style now and say 'oh no it isn't....'
