VRS arriving on Tuesday...

Featured Replies

Long time reader first time poster....

My 170CR VRS arrives on Tuesday and I want to know whether I should be taking it easy for a 1000 miles or so, or whether I can give it some from day 1. I've heard some people say that taking it easy is the best way, and others who say it needs thrashing early on to get decent mpg.

I know this is probably covered in another thread somewhere, but I've searched for about an hour and can't find anything specifically related to this...

Any advice or pointing in the right direction would be appreciated.

WELCOME to Briskoda.

The handbook will tell you to take it easy for the first 500 miles and then a little less easy for the next 500 miles.

My general advice, taking this as a basis, is to avoid letting the engine labour i.e.better to do 2,250 rpm in 3rd up a hill than 1800 rpm in 4th; BUT don't be frightened of using the odd spot of 3/4 or full throttle; just don't rag the nuts off it immediately.

Conversely; don't drive it like a pipe smoking granddad, i.e. not exceeding 1500rpm in any gear or using more than 1/2 throttle (guess you wouldn't have bought a vRS if you drive like this anyway :D).

Variation of load, revs etc. is best - don't keep to the same speed all the time.

Simply; enjoy. :D;)

It's not like you would thrash a diesel like you would a petrol as there is no benefit in performance terms as the best way to progress is to keep in the peak torque range of each gear.

Get mine tomorrow,we'll have to compare note's.:)

Will do Simba. I take it you now have yours? How are you finding it?

Welcome

I got my CR vRS in October - it's brilliant........

As for running it in, I did not bother - gave it full beans once I'd warmed it up for 10 minutes !!! But it's a company car so I won't have to live with any potential long term impact!!!

The CR is a great engine, a real mix between petrol and the older PD engines in terms of it's delivery - and it revs to 5.4k too, not much point in going beyond 5k but up to there it is suprisingly un-diesel like!!!

Enjoy!!

No point reving past 3.5k IMO as there's little there :thumbdwn:

Have you driven a CR? Perhaps it's just me, but i think it has a far better spread across the rev range..... took me a while to get used to it after the PD unit, but it's definitely worth exploring above 3.5k!!!

I've got a CR and there isn't much after 3.5k hence my comment above. The TFSI (which I used to have) just keeps pulling hard all through the range whereas once you're off peak torque in the CR TDI it just seems to run out of puff. You need to make the most of the gears to get into the peak torque range of the next gear.

K&N 57i induction kit ought to help. :D;) worked wonders on my vRS TDi PD 170

That'll be why then :)...... I have not driven a petrol vRS so can't comment on how that goes (well though I would imagine!!!)....

Still think you need to try revving your CR a bit though!!!!

Yep that's what I'm thinking Guy

It may just need running in a bit more but I don't think that alone will fundamentally change the characteristic of the engine...

collected mine yesterday, nice to compare it with my 170pd golf not as nippy, but very close.more refined though.the dsg seems a lot nicer must be a softwere upgrade maybe.haven't driven far, been playing with the sat nav [need to go back to school bit hi/tech for me but i'm getting there].vrs nicer place to sit in than the golf.

Hi guys. Had my first decent run in the VRS today going across to Preston and back - about 260 miles round trip. I'm breaking it in so I haven't been booting it yet....

I'm really impressed with how quiet it is and like the sporty(ish) growl it seems to have. It's that quiet compared to my old vw that I was happily cruising along the M6 at 100 without realising. My XC90 is very quiet and eats the motorway miles, but the VRS seems as quiet and as comfy to spend time in.

The A roads gave me a chance to see what it's like on corners and overtaking in short distances, and again I'm really impressed.

Got a couple of decent trips next week so should be able to start giving it some welly soon and will report back.

Simba - how are you finding yours?

I'm delighted with mine.

Just under 500 miles since middle of December - mixed driving and overall average is almost 37mpg - can't wait to see what it will do when it's run in a bit more.

DSG box makes for a very relaxing drive, and takes no fun out of driving enjoyment. Haven't had the opportunity to flick it across to manual yet, but will give it a try soon.

Have looked at other posts regarding replacement DVD players/sat nav systems available on ebay etc, and am waiting for the following one to become available sometime soon :-

Zenec - Touch another World : ZE-NC5602 für SKODA Octavia II

Will be great if it is just plug and play without having to worry too much about how to wire it up.
