Halfords Oil not listed on here because?

Featured Replies

On my way home tonight the oil light came on, so I drove to the nearest Halfords to have a look at what they have. They didn't have any Shell oil, so bought their own brand stuff. My car is on a variable service and looked through their little book thing and it said I needed this:

Halfords 5W30 VW/Audi Fully Synthetic 2 Litre Oil from Halfords Price £19.99

Bought it and bunged a bit in, oil level is up to the middle of the hatched bit of the dipstick. I presumed that I had to top up so the level is within this area, but reading the manual it seems I have to fill it covering the hatched area - for ****s sake!

My bonnet release handle keeps coming off so takes about 10 minutes to get the bloody bonnet open, loads of fun scrabbling around in the dark and cold for me tonight.

So, is there any reason this Oil isn't listed on this thread? Have I bought the wrong stuff?

I checked the Halfords website with my registration number and it said I needed that Oil, so heres hoping they haven't got it wrong!

I used the same stuff in my PD140 for the very same reason and given the amount of oil it goes through the Halfords own stuff is a bit cheaper than the Shell and Mobil stuff.

It meets VW/Audi 507.00 which is long life/variable servicing for TDIs so I wouldn't worry.

The only problem with Halfords is Halfords 95% of stuff is over priced or of poor quality!

Agree it's overpriced but the Quality on 95% of the stuff is good!

e.g. Car parts and the professional tool range!

Nothing wrong with the oil IMO, if there was they wouldnt be able to state that it's 507.00 compliant.

The price of said oil isn't bad either.

And yes, the pro tooling is ok, had a pro socket set for almost 10 years of hard service engineer life and its still going strong. Busted an 8mm pro allen key after 3 years, they replaced it straight away.

That oil is IIRC made by comma.

Halfords is no more overpriced than any other retailer that has to maintain a large number of *retail* stores and stock.

Yes some motor factors will be cheaper, and halfords trade prices are about on par with these, some lower, some higher.

The quality comment however is just untrue. The parts, tools and lubricants etc are all made by big names and work well IMHO.

Addressing the point yes I think that should be on the list.

I bought Halfords own brand when my warning light came on.

5L for £42 seemed to be that bit cheaper than the "brand names" and as it conforms to the VW standards it has to be of a certain quality/grade.

As for the comment on pricing - as already said, compare Halfords to anywhere else and the prices are very much on par.

Even with some of the smaller motor factors.

Of course they are more expensive than online - online means paying for the rent of a large warehouse.

Halfords have to pay rent on large stores, warehouses and staff - of course there will be a price difference.

I will use Halfords for those "need urgently" items.

If I can wait then over the net is obviously cheaper, if I can't wait then a 10 mile drive to my local Halfords does the job nicely.

I will admit to having a Halfords trade card (due to my BTEC National in Motor Vehicle Technology) but still - certainly can't complain about the quality of the stuff there.

I agree with the others - there's nothing wrong with the quality of Halfords stuff nowadays. It used not to be the case 5 or so years ago but that has totally changed in recent times. And prices on most stuff are pretty reasonable when you take into account the nature of the business.
