Freezing Door and Boot Seals

Featured Replies

In this cold weather this morning my boot and driver's side door were frozen shut. I had to climb in through the passenger side which was not very satisfactory.

Any ideas what I can treat the rubber seals with to prevent this happening? I thought maybe a silicone grease? A mate suggested using neat antifreeze rubbed onto the dry seals with a cloth?

Help please

(I also lost my glove whilst climbing into my car today so I'm one cold unhappy bunny too!)

id try just giving them a good clean with some warm water and a sponge.just make sure you dry it off if its still cold. id be wary of rubbing things like anti-freeze onto the rubber, as it might start to perish the rubber(or it might not??)

ive got a spare left glove:rofl:

Halfords, maplin etc

Maplin sell the grease as a tube too so then you can just put it on the cloth and rub it in.

Would this silicone grease be the same stuff as used in the "Cage Mod" as regularly discussed in the Fabia section? (i.e. the grease used in the MAF connector)

If so then I have a tube of this. I'll give it a go.

Yes.

In that case get a bit of old rag, put a small bubble of the grease on it and rub it over the door seals then go over again with the rag and rub it in so the seal isn't obviously greasy.

Should do the job.

Silicon grease is silicon grease. Holts make a Rubber and Nylon lubricant spray - slicon oil spray. Also any of the 'make your dash all slippery and shiny' (argh!) products are silicon based.

Two hands, pull harder.

Apparently Autoglym Vinyl & Rubber Care is excellent at stopping seals freeze.

I tried many of the common silicone sprays etc and recon the best is the grease sold by plumbers merchants for use on 'O' rings and seals on push fit connectors. Not cheap but you do not need much and it lasts a lot longer and doesn't get washed off like the sprays.

The best I found is a can of Elf brand silicone lubricant. Works wonders on seals, squeaky windows, the hinges of doors in the house.

There comes a point where the plastic door handle starts to bend...

that would be silicone grease

Lidle sell a silicone spray which is excellant for this and many other uses.

Also a very light spray of silicone spray down the window sills stops them seizing up... also makes them go up and down faster too:)

In the good old days we always used talcum powder!

I'd be wary of using any kind of lubricant, as it's bound to end up on your clothes! Keeping the seals clean will help of course, but I wouldn't put anything on once I'd done it.

On the one and only occasion it's happened to me, I poured hot water around the edge of the door, and within a moment, the door was free...

Silicone is actually recommended for precisely this purpose around here (Finland). If you don't keep the seals lubricated, ice and cold can damage them pretty quickly. In the worst case they will tear, and you'll have to fit a completely new seal.
