juddering - weird smell

Featured Replies

hyey all , driving in the fab last night i noti9ced a juddering as if the car was going to stall. puled into a garage an noticed some steam coming from under the front arch drivers side. then a funny smell of what i thought was oil. but no warning lights or anything have come on.

witht he car just ticking over i noticed in was still juddering and sounded more like a diesel when its a 1.2 sport.

anyone know of what this can be?

turned off engine then left for 15 mins, started again an car now drives fine???????

thanks!

The juddering / diesely noise sounds exactly like when our friends' Picasso stopped firing on no. 3 cylinder. It, too, ran fine after being switched off and back on again. The oily smell would therefore logically be unburned fuel, and TBH the steam could well just be heat from the brakes in the current weather.

lol. not that mech minded - whats the coil pack do etc?

an is a costly reapir? what causes it to go wrong?

They're what make the spark plugs spark. Only thing is, I'm not sure the 1.2 has individual coil packs for each cylinder as is the case on a modern engine (certainly SWMBO's 1.4 doesn't - link [ignore yellow oval - it's the thing across the bottom of the picture]) and so AIUI a problem with the coils would affect more than one cylinder. Could be way off with that, though. If there weren't any lights on the dash, and it's gone and doesn't come back, could have been a bit of contamination in one of the injectors or something as innocuous as that...

i did give it a boot on the throttle and seemed to be ok after that. i thought maybe a bit of diry fuel or something. i do have a induction kit on it and an oil breather filter, both are on ok - made sur ei checked them.
