mysterious new warning symbol

Featured Replies

Hi guys

I've had an appearance of a mysterious symbol at the top of the maxidot display, where the radio station usually shows.

It appears only for a second or so when starting the engine and has only appeared twice (1st time was a few weeks ago, then again today).

I've looked all the way through the handbook, twice, and there's no mention of this symbol at all, anywhere.

It looks a lot like this:

You can tell I never went to art school :D - but to be fair I didn't exactly get long to study what it looked like!

It clearly looks like an exhaust/emissions warning of some kind to me, but is it indeed a warning or just some spurious symbol produced from the memory of the software used in this system, which isn't exactly without a few idiosyncracies that we all know about.

Car is a 2005 1.9TDi 130 Elegance, 35k miles and running fine.

Any suggestions welcome. Come on Lummox, what d'ya reckon ?

Maybe the DPF needs some lovin?

Looks like a picture of a cat to me, so I also would think the DPF is in need of a de-clogging.

DPF might seem a logical conclusion... but the motor's a 1.9TDi AWX - not a DPF in sight

First you need to get the car scanned to see if any fault codes are logged. IIRC this can come up when you have a bad oxygen sensor (the reading is in range but wrong).

That is the DPF light! But you have a 1.9 130 so don't have one. Best get that checked.

edited post as I didn't read it was a 1.9! - apologies.

Lambda sensor if there is one, or the cat.

Hmm.

I've an AWX sans-Maxidot, and what I refer to as an "engine management light" is actually, according to the manual, the "engine or emission control warning lamp".

In other words, is this a non-DPF, Maxidotted way of telling you a sensor has died?

Whereabouts in Cheshire are you? Happy to run a VAG-COM scan for you, if you wish - see if it sheds any more light. Drop me a PM.

Steve
