MFA accuracy

Featured Replies

mornin' all

filled up my VRS for the second time last night, i always do tank full to tank full so I can work out the MPG..... so I now have my first tank full mpg calculation....

the MFA said 54.4mpg.... but i actually got 51mpg, still good as i`m running in etc (500 miles on the clock now!)

but my VR6's MFA (same computer really just without the real-time MPG) was much more accurate than that, even after 100k miles.

Whats everyone else's like?

the on board computers tend to be quite accurate however they assume a maximum amount of fuel in the tank so if you manage to overfill (quite easy on the octy) you can confuse them...

the other option is the forcourt you purchased from may not be quite accurate either.. making you think you have put slightly more fuel in than you did.....

I don't use the MFA that much, but it seems to know how many miles I can get from a full tank - it normally indicates 470 from a full tank, (to dry) and normally the beeper goes off at around 430/440, with the usual 40 mile allowance to run-dry.

I normally end up using the MFA for little more than wondering how cold it is outside...

I really miss the MFA I had in the Octavia, I now just leave the trip on to see how many miles I get to a tank, about 500 now and 1/4 left :D

MFA or MFD (multi function display)? My Octavia's MFD consistently gives optimistic total mpg readings - usually showing 2-3 mpg better than the actual figure based on total fuel put in against total mileage. I have checked the accuracy of the odometer against GPS on a number of long journeys and the error is less than 1%.

Mine also overreads by about 2mpg when I bother to calculate it by hand.

I found that there was a difference between MFA and manaula calculation on my previous octy.

I found that is was more accurate if I calculated between Low fuel warning, and amount put i when the fuel filler clicked . after about 4 fuel tankfuls started to get correct reading.

I had a VW Touran last week. Playing with the MFA/MFD I noted one of the functions was a small image of a petrol pump and next to it was displayed "75 miles". The needle was nearly on the Red. I stopped, and put

I'm sure that the little pump thingy, is miles left to run out. my MFD seems to only differ by 1mpg, compared to actualy calculating it myself. I've reset comp 2 when refilling, 3 times now, and like i said only seems to be 1mpg ish difference. now i'm going to leave comp 2, to see what sort of mpg i get over a few tankfulls. Did read on another thread, that comp 2 resets itself after 2 or 3 K. so far after 750 ish miles, it's returning 46 ish. Not bad, seeing as though i do boot it a bit, through the gears.

cheers

Ps cars done 5200 miles so far.

Oh yea, the vrs does have the miles left thingy. Whenever you refill, it adjusts miles left, accordingly.

Jonno.

Have you tried testing it's accuracy! :):):):):):):):):):):)

An AA man told me years ago how inaccurate analogue Fuel Gauges were, at that time SAAB and Ford were the worst. When my Touran said "75 miles" left I just wonder if it was telling the truth, i.e. that I had AT LEAST 75 miles left.

When i filled up today, i reckoned i should get about 38 litres in, from the comp readouts estimate. got 38.8 litres in.

Usualy fill up when showing 1/4 empty, but if i leave it a bit longer, and the fuel light comes on, i'll fill up straight away.

Think fuel light comes on when 7 lts left.

cheers

Jonno.
