Steinbauer Pbox

Featured Replies

First of all, I have used the search facility, but can't find a topic that really covers this.

My 2004 Skoda Octavia Elegance 1.9TD has a Pbox fitted. The problem is that it's a company lease hire car and now it is time to change it, I can't work out how to remove it. It is supposed to be a simple operation that takes a few minutes, but (and you techies will have to try to stop laughing now) I can't even find out where it is connected to the four injectors. I took a photograph when it was being taken out of the car it was previously attached to and it looked a doddle, with the four injectors clealt visible on top of the engine, but I'm damned if I can find any sign of them.

If anybody is interested, the performance boost is quite astonishing, especially when pulling away in second gear. The only problem being that it can be all to easy to find yourself going over a 30mph limit in an instant, without even realising it. According to the trip computer, I regularly average 66mph on long journeys and during one trip out to Newark it was reading an astonishing 78mpg for a couple of miles (set on average speed, not in the constantly recalculating mode).

I have to say that I am dreading having to drive the car anywhere once it is removed, as I might find myself pulling out of slipways, forgetting that I can no longer simply power out of it at speed.

I know I should be taking this to a mechanic, but I foolishly thought it would be a a few minutes work (even for a noddy) to do it myself. I am now running out of time and really don't want to have to send the car back with it still in place.

Any sensible tips would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure if that's a sales pitch or not, but it won't be connected to the 4 injectors.

It will be connected to the look so probably somewhere on the battery side of the engine around a connector.

Why would that be a sales pitch? I only mentioned my thoughts because I had found previous posts asking for people's opinions.

It is connected in-line to each of the four injectors via a wiring loom. There are two connections to the battery, another plugs directly into a senson and you also have to solder a wire to a reference (whatever that is). I tried to follow the route of the wiring, but just can't make sense of it at all - it just seems to disappear into an area where I can't follow it.

If you require that much work to install it as opposed to a simple plug in box like a dragon, then i'd give it a miss anyway.

I'd assume the reference is an earth, although sometimes it can be a known voltage.

Look in Google for Steinbauer and you can the fixings as described by Carpsharp.

Quality item.

Carpsharp,

If your still stuck on how to remove it, then ring Steinbauer in the UK on 01553-829990 and they will gladly talk you through the removal of the box from the car.

The reference wire goes to the accelerator pedal..

If that's a Kings Lynn number it is probably connected with Rossiters. They originally fitted it onto my car for a magazine test, but seemed to forget about it afterwards. I wanted to fit it onto my next company car, so I didn't really want to remind them that I'd still got it

They are indeed Rossiters, so silence......................................

I have got a Pbox fitted to my Fabia vRS SE.

As you mentioned the performance is very good & you do have to watch your speed (& the car in front) when you are joining trafic.:)

My actual mpg is around 50 mpg (62 mpg on computer).

Mine was fitted by the Skoda garage owner when I bought the car but it is only one large multipin connect that is removed & the Pbox's two connectors are then connected to each of these. The only other connector is to the cars battery.

My box just sits between the battery & the front of the car.

If you need any more information I can get some for you.

This is the P-box wiring loom that was removed from the demonstrator car (it think it might have been a Fabia but I could be wrong)

As you might have gathered, I am not a mechanic, but I just can't see where those four injector connections have disappeared to on my Octavia.

P.S. I assumed it was the 96Kw Engine

Yeah thanks :D I did it anyway, so I've shopped myself good and proper now. I'm sure they wouldn't want it back anyway - it must have got a bit dirty by now :D

I received the instructions very promptly and now I can see why I was confused. The model for my car is completely different to the one illustrated and doesn't involve direct access to the injectors at all. I might have another try.

Can they really be that far out. When I recorded my highest average mileage, I asked one of the technicians at the local Skoda dealer if the trip computer was reasonably accurate, and he assured me that it was usually reliable to within a mile or two. Mind you, the miles/fuel remaining figure can change by 20 miles within the space of five, but that's probably works on a different principle - or does it?

Is it possible that the shape of the tank itself could play a role in this?

Yes, the computer can be up to 20% optimistic on my TDI, and if you add a tuning box they can be even further out (because of the way the tuning box works the injectors are delivering more fuel than the computer expects).

If you want a more accurate figure, calculate fuel consumption on a fill-to-fill basis. Try to fill to the same level each time, and average over 3-4 fills to minimise the effects of over and under-filling.

The distance to empty (DTE) is calulated on amount of fuel remaining multiplied by recent fuel consumption. In both my Octy and my Transporter DTE seems to be optimistic until near empty, when they are more accurate then suddenly get pessimistic near empty.

I would advise you not to rely on it or your gauge when near empty. It is better for engines (and diesels particularly) not to run out of fuel.

Can anybody tell me how to disconnect the multi-wired connector at the side of the engine, that connects to the injectors? I was told it would be one of those simple one with two snap-springs, but I can't work it out at all. It rotates to some degree, but I can't find an unlocking point.

I worked it out in the end. Each connector has a locking lug that needs to be pushed upwards with the tip of a screwdriver. I was trying to separate the two revolving sections instead of simply unscrewing the back part where the wires go in. It's one of those things that as soon as you have managed to do it once looks ridiculously simple.

I was quite worried about putting the original connectors together, as they are in a position where it is very difficult to see where the pins are to line them up. It worked first time though, so perhaps I just got lucky.
