Impreza STI UK TYPE- are they worth it??

Recommended Posts

On longer runs, the Impreza was actually very good.

I bought my last one in Cardiff, and drove from there, and filled up in Moffat on the way home to Edinburgh, so roughly 350miles to a full tank.

That was with very sedate driving though. :D

IIRC, the UK cars have longer gear ratios which means that they're quite civil on motorways and our modded UK turbo averaged around 28mpg over the 60k miles of abuse over which we owned it. A friend had a bug-eye STI-UK and got around 20-25mpg but she used to drive it like it was stolen, especially on the motorways in the early hours! :D

Cambelt service is a biggie (was due at 45k mile intervals I think) as it's an engine out job, but most specialists can do it for a more reasonable price, so it might be worth trying to buy one that's just had it done. Also worth getting the geometry set up as soon as you get the car to save you excessive tyre bills.

The Jap imports may also be worth a look too as they tend to be higher spec, although insurance may be more as a result....

I have a 55 plate 2.0 STI PPP and the Mrs has the Furby VRs, both are great fun to drive but I waited till I could afford to run one properly without worry before I took the step up from a midlly modified CTR.

19 MPG is poor but doesnt worry me as it wasnt a surprise, servicing costs aint to bad and I trust the independant specialist I use far more than the local dealer.

The only problem with running an STI is "What car next?" I find myself drawing away from lots of cars i'd always wanted as they aint no quicker/fun than the Scooby, that leaves me looking at newer STI's as the next replacement.

As for the Furby, its equally as much fun to drive spirtidly as the Scoob, and the understated looks do surprise alot of folks off the lights.

Enjoy

Would an STI Spec D (for discreet) be any easier on the insurance?

Same car but with low profile spoiler, all external badges deleted, and a reserved interior.

Although I think the cheapest Spec D's are still around £10/11K

Not that i'm aware of.

Mate has one and it was exactly the same as his previousl Sti for insurance.

I did look at these Impreza's and the insurene price mainly went on the age and if the car had a Prodive Performance Pack on it.

The Impreza WRX is a group 19 and the WRX STI is a group 20. The differance between a car with the PPP and a car without it did seem to be big. A 02 reg Bug eye 2.0l STI was under £1k cheeper to insure than a 53 reg Blob eye 2.0l with a PPP.

So i was thinking of getting an 02 reg Bug eye shape (hoping that a car 7years old that has prob been thashed wont have to many probs) and keep it for a few years then get a newer one with the PPP so i dont get bord with the Impreza straight away :D

Hopfuly that works

Its very hard to get Blue light Ambulance insurence on any import due to the strict MOT the vericals have to go through to be registed as an Ambulance :(
