Polish products for a beginner?

Featured Replies

Over my birthday and Christmas I have managed to amass more car care stuff  I have been having fun with my Albrite foam lance and have some more Megs stuff ready for a good clean when the salt has disappeared.

I have also opted for a rotary polisher and would like to get to grips with using it. I will be getting some spare body panels to work with first just to practice and get used to it before attacking my car but I am a bit lost with all the polish choices:confused: I've read loads on DW and here but I'm still abit confused.:o

Could someone recommend some products to get me going. My needs are going to be relatively light for my car (some minor swirls now showing with the odd deeper mark) to some heavier work needed on my wifes car. It has hand marks still showing from being dusted by the police when the car got broken into. I'm not sure what they used but it doesn't want to come off through normal cleaning.:(

So I guess I'll need a couple of types of polish ...... hard and soft cutting?

Also if it can be helped while I am practising I don't want to spend a fortune on the best stuff available but maybe something that just works for now.

Thanks in advance:)

Try a PM to Baker21, he'll sort you out

You can take a look to the Meguiar's or Menzerna products. You can find info in their web site about the cutting degree of those products and related accessories.

Thanks Steve........

Sounds like you have the right tool for the job mate but just need some products to try out on your paintwork..........

I can help out if you like and basically I have a pretty good range of products and pads and I am not that far away from you at all.........

Happy to head over and help you out or your more than welcome to pop over to Northants and try some polishes and pads that I have to see what works best. I am a big fan of 3M and Menz products on VAG paint using both 3M Pads and Megs Pads but this is all dependant on the amount of swirls and scratches and how deep they are.

There is a guy over on DW that runs a sample service - giving you the opportunity to try different products.

He typically will decant a litre of product into 100ml pots, and you pay one tenth of the product retail price, plus a bit extra to cover the pot and a small donation to charity. Its a great idea for "hobby" detailers where you don't need the quantities that the pro's do.

I started with AutoGlym products but soon ditched them for megs and colly stuff which just grew from there. IMHO if youre wanting something you can just go and buy from Halfords I'd get yourself a bottle of AG super resin polish - not the most professional or expensive but pretty good at removing the odd swirl by hand. I'm sure its recommended on DW as well, it was definately compared to aload of others on the market some of which cost alot of money and it came out near top!

Thanks for your suggestions guys. The sample thing sounds like it could be just the thing although I'll need to know what samples to have. :)

Baker21 thanks for the kind offer. I go over to Northampton regularly with my work and being a company car it would make sense to come over to you. After I've sourced a suitable test piece I'll give you a PM.

Thanks

Clever lad Alan - Simon'll keep you right. :)

Was going to suggest Borsh and sausages till I saw the rest of the posts . Don't think AutoGlym is a good sauce for Polish sausages:rofl::rofl:
