R.I.P - My cherished VRS :(

Featured Replies

Wednesday night I nipped out to get a few bits for tea and on the way I hit a patch of black ice and dispite my best efforts my car spun off the road at 50mph and turned on it roof finally coming to a stop 50 yard down the road. I had to kick out the passenger side window to get out the car but a kind passer by pulled me to safety where I waited until the paramedics arrived.

I have now been released from hospital as they suspected a broken neck or fractured spine, but after 3 x-rays, 2 CT's and 18hrs in a neck harness the consultant finally gave me the all clear :o

Fair to say I am absolutly gutted about my car and seeing as I don't have GAP insurance it pretty much looks like I will be bady out of pocket as well :(:(

Waiting for the insurance company to get back in touch with me, so all I can do is wait now.

Rich

How old is the car and how long have you had it?

Sorry to hear about your injuried but at least you're still in one piece.

At least you are ok. The car can be replaced, and you might be lucky with some of the deals that are out there.

Sorry to hear about the accident fella, glad your ok though. As someone already said, a car can be replaced... your lucky you came out of it relatively unscathed

Never a good thing to hear.

Glad your "ok" though.

I hit a patch of black ice

Must resist the urge...

In all seriousness, glad you are ok, and good luck with the finances.

Mate, I'm so sorry to hear your news!

Just glad that you & yours (and the dogs) are ok. I'm sure the stay in Hospital was an ordeal, but better be safe than sorry!

You guys just take care, our thoughts & wishes are with you!

I am bery sorry to hear of your unfortunate accident. I hope that you are well on the mend and that you will be able to replace the car without too much heartache!

Ouch! Glad to hear you're ok - that's the main thing - cars can be replaced.

On a side note, can I have first dibs on your Koni FSDs and Eibachs? LOL ;)

As has been said all throughout this thread - the important thing is that you are OK.

When I was 19 and buying only my second ever car (many years ago) I bought a 5 year old Mk2 Golf (to replace my Mk1).

12 hours later I was driving it, something leapt out of the road in front of me and I put it upside into a ditch.

£3000 - £100 scrap in 12hrs and I only had TPF&T insurance!

But again, at the end of the day all I lost was some skin on one arm and a curry - living to fight the insurance company is a good position to be in!

Remember - if it's a write off your insurance company need to replace like with like, so they have to give you enough to get another vRS of the same age/condition etc.

excuse me being thick, but what is "GAP" insurance? and why don't you have it?

Glad to hear you're ok though...

If you write off a car you should get paid market value by the insurance company which is enough to buy an identical vehicle (though in practice it might not be)

Gap insurance would give you an extra payout on top of this , and depending on exactly what type of policy you have it it can either be enough to pay off any outstanding finance if you owe more than it's worth , or enough to buy a brand new car to replace yours.

Both of these would normally mean you are actually better off financially after a write off - especially if your two and a half year old car gets replaced with a brand new vehicle!

Personally I wouldn't bother with this type of policy , but other people swear by them.

If you shop around GAP policies can be pretty reasonable - but like all insurance it is a gamble if you'll need it or not.

I took it out when I bought my 07 vRS. (18 month old when I bought it)

I can't for the life of me remember how much it did cost me - but honestly it wasn't bad, I'm not somebody who spends silly money on useless things.

The policy runs for 3 years.

If at any time in those 3 years I was to write off my car the GAP will pay the difference between what my main insurance give me for my car and the cost of another 18 month old vRS.

So in theory my car could be a total of 4.5yrs old (almost) and I could write it off and I'd get an 18 month old replacement.

It also means that I don't need to haggle with my insurance company over what they give me for the write-off as the GAP covers any shortfall.

Without GAP then the insurance company will make an offer, I'll counter and I'm sure it'll go on for some time.

very sorry to hear about the car richie but glad youre ok

from looking its hard to find GAP insurance that covers your car if you have any mods.

 Really glad you're OK. Your accident does prove how good Octavia's are in a crash. I suspect your injuries would have been much more serious in some other types of car.

good to hear your ok :)

whats so funny tom? a couple weeks ago it was very cold in some places, in oxford it dropped to -13 in some places over night and got very slippery in places

i have taken out gap insurance once and been offered it a few times now and its always been the same and not quite what others have said it is. what gap insurance does is pay out the difference between the insurance settlement and the cost of the car to you minus any extra's including first time registration, ved etc etc so if buying a new car for 20k(on the road price)and GAP was taken out then two years later that car was written off it would not make it up to 20k as that wasn't the cost of the car, it would only make it up to the cost of the actual car so your normally a few quid short of the OTR price, possibly 1k or more sometimes.

Stuff the car, more important that you came away from it OK.

Thanks so much for everyone's kind words, it really does mean alot :) I'm still here in one piece, thats the main thing.

On the insurance front, after speaking to someone in the trade today it became apparrent that my insurance company will prob offer be around 9k which would neither be enough to replace my car or pay the 10.4k required by Skoda finance to settle the PCP :( - Hope this isnt the case as it will leave me without a car and with a £1400 whole in my pocket.

Awaiting a call from Directline tomorrow to arrange for a hire car and assessor to come out to give a valuation, its just a qaiting game now I guess.

To answer Karlos69, I guess you could have the springs and FSD's...but thats if I can buy the car back from directline? Never been through a car insurance cliam like this before so I wouldn't know..does anybody have any ideas how this would work? Incidentally would there be a demand for a written off Octy

As other said, glad you're ok. Metal can be replaced people can't.

As for the vRS there may well be a demand for bits/spares on here. Alloys, internals, bolts everything may be of use that's not bent or broken. Depends on what the insurance company offer it to you at.

Having been down the same route I would start collecting evidence of similar models and their values. I used Auto Trader and also local Skoda dealers. I take it the insurance know of any 'extras'.;)

Sorry to hear about your crash but as others have said at least you're alright.

Gutted to hear that, but very glad your alright.

Sorry to hear about the Motor mate but the main thing is your ok

Glad you're OK.

Have you checked your finance docs to be 100% that you dont have GAP? Many finance companies include by default as it's pretty cheap per month.

As a matter or interest did the car have ESP?

As a matter or interest did the car have ESP?

Yes, it has it standard.
