Power loss and cutting out

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, hope you can help

Sorry if this repeats another persons post, or if it's a common problem

Ok - got a 54 plate octavia 110 TDI with 110,000 on it

2 main things are happening, may be related

First is when the engine is cold and i pull away hard, it seems to overfuel when i change to second, make a high pitched noise and then tries to cut out. Sometimes it kills the engine, other times I can ride it out in second. Whilst it burns the fuel its quite smoky. It doesnt do it every time and it is fine when warm.

Secondly, the car loses its turbo at times (especially when going up banks). It is possible to turn it off and re-start the car on the key and it kicks in again. It has done this about 6 times in as many weeks, but only once the warning light came on the dashboard. It does this when cold and warm.

Can anybody shed some light on things for me and tell me any inexpensive things to try in the first instance (i.e. sensors etc)

Thanks in advance

First of all the car is going into limp mode to protect the engine. Turning the ignition on and off resets this.

You need to get the car scanned and post the fault codes here

For the limp mode problem it will almost certainly be the turbo, given the mileage it will be all cacked up and the vanes are jamming causing the turbo to overboost which makes the ecu put car into limp mode. A search on here will reveal all - search for sticky turbo, but basically you can get it cleaned out rather than replaced.

No idea about the first problem though, like rbaldwin says you need to get the car checked for fault codes. Check in the diagnostics/vagcom forum to see if there is anyone near you who could do it.
