Government car insurance plans

Featured Replies

I've been hearing on the radio all day that our wonderful Government want to change the law on insurance for cars. Apparently, in an effort to reduce the amount of uninsured drivers on the roads, they plan to make it an offence to keep an uninsured vehicle, even if it doesn't get used. Couple of problems I can see with this being, I very much doubt those who can't be bothered to insure cars that they actually drive would bother to pay money just to park a car on their drive. Also, what would it mean for people who are say restoring an old vehicle? Would they have to pay to insure a vehicle that is in pieces in their garage and is blatenty not going to be going anywhere near a road?

Please discuss.

If it's declared SORN, there will be no need to insure the vehicle. Seems perfectly sensible to me.

But would the new law take SORN into account or will it just mean all cars have to be insured reguardless?

So what is the point behind having to insure every car? Obviously if it isn't taxed or declared SORN....someone somewhere is going to get a *** whoopin anyway?

And if its declared SORN, then theres no real point to having to insure a car anyway.

Proof indeed that Brown and co live on some distant planet .(Me ar** comes to mind)

Do they really think that those that can't be bothered with insurance are going to care if it's SORN'd or not .

Be more effective to only allow movement of a SORN'd vehivcle under some form of single trip licence ,and up the Police numbers .

it will be another one of those studies that has been carried , that when it comes to costing it up , it will never come into force ,

a bit like the police/vehicle inspectorate being able test vehicles at the side of the round to see if they pass the emissions ,

Yes, Uranus :D

Stupid Rule, Import a car off radar, happy days.

Some restorers still take out insurance even if the car is in a thousand bits. Just to cover fire and theft.

The only reason I could see for a change, is the treasury would like the extra tax, that they currently get from the insurance premium. Wouldn't surprise me in the least, given the track record of the current muppets in power.

Sooo that'll help with the toe-rags that don't register the cars. I'd rather see more ANPR traps. This just seems like a way to nail people who have forgotten.

I can't help but think that this will 'catch' the wrong people. Another way of getting at the easy pickings cash.

Hmmm.

MPM :)

I'm still thinking putting 1/2p on fuel to fun a government third party only fund and some very strong anti-fraud measured on that would be a much better way of making sure all people have the minimum standard of insurance.

Insurance companies would have people over a barrel then either and people could choose whether to go to an insurance company to top up with fire/theft and comprehensive cover levels etc.

The proposals make the offence fine-able + points (6 I believe). No licence = higher fine. SORN vehicles are exempt.

Gets my vote.
